I have had my X5 since it was a baby, and was one of the charter members of Aximsite. I used the X5 daily since the moment I got it - in recent years, it's been more to check my email without powering up the laptop than anything else.
Yesterday, I unplugged it and within 2 minutes it died. When I plugged it back in, it was totally reset to factory condition - long story short, even if I could configure it again, every time I unplug it, it resets back to factory settings.
I know I need to get rid of it - but should I buy a used X5 from somewhere (anybody here have a working one they want to sell me cheap?) or just call the darn thing done and find a new wifi PDA to play with?
Since I no longer use it outside of my house most days, I'd hate to spend a fortune to get another one up and running, and I'm really not wishing to pay $30 a month extra for my Verizon phone plan to get a Blackberry when I won't use the email capabilty very much.
Any suggestions? Comments? Tips? Thanks in advance!
Donna
it just sounds like you need to replace the internal and/or external battery
Not too expensive or "very difficult" to do.

Sounds like you need a new main battery and backup battery, look on ebay for the battery. The backup battery is a cr2032 that you can buy at the drug store. On the other hand you could always upgrade :D
But my backup battery has been changed often over the years, and that was the first thing I did when I lost everything, swapped it out for a new one even though it said it was at 80% capacity.
The main battery reads 100% even for the few minutes it's unplugged. But that is probably the culprit. Is it also a common battery? I would be very willing to try to replace that first.
I took out the main battery (it was not loose) and put it back in and it's been staying on for at least an hour - My question, since the backup battery is reading okay, and now the li-ion battery is reading between 70 & 80% (fluctuates up and down when I check it) should I think this is more than just a battery problem? Meaning, the battery latches were not open, and even if it was, the backup battery was fine, why should it have totally reset in the first place? Shouldn't one of the batteries held the information?
I'm thinking I have more than a battery problem, or do you think I'm reading this wrong?
Sounds logical given the situation. I could be remembering this wrong, but the backup battery can hold the data for either 10-15 minutes or 30 minutes. Typically, when a battery is bad in my experience the main battery will charge to 100%, but discharge rapidly, or it will not charge to 100%. I guess the cheapest thing would be to try to buy another main battery on ebay(10 bucks maybe), also I don't think x5's are going for much on ebay in the worst case scenario that you have to replace it. The main shock for me, when upgrading was realizing how great the battery life in the x5 was compared to x30 or x51v.
The X5 doesn't have persistent memory, which means if it loses power completely it will hard reset.
The Backup battery is there to allow you to change batteries without losing everything, but it has a very limited power capacity.
If you remove the main battery even with a perfect Backup battery it will eventually go back to factory settings.
It sounds like you had both batteries die at the same time, unfortunate but not uncommon, perhaps your batteries are old and unstable, perhaps the connectors are dirty and you lost charge for long enough to drain the backup as well.
All batteries wear out, replacing one or both will probably give your X5 a new lease on life.
It really does sound like a battery problem, the reset to factory is normal if all power is lost.
So even though both batteries show a good charge, you think it's just not registering correctly and it's worth trying to set it up again with new batteries?
I'm happy to try it - oh, I have cleaned the contacts - willing to try anything not to have to sink any money and time into buying and learning something new.
Or see about getting an x50v or x51v on ebay or elsewhere...
Even one of the newer HPs are quite nice... but that is spending money

and bought a new main battery (for $8, and that includes shipping) and we shall see if it's any better. I have been able to get the pda synced again, and put in some of my emaill addresses - some it just won't recognize, tho it did before.
Anyway, I will keep it plugged in and watch out for the fluctuating battery capacity (very wonky). I will check back after I get the new battery and let everybody know what's going on.
The new battery is good, but the same problem persists
I realized that the backup battery status bar is all over the place, even with a new battery, one minute it will read 90% - the next time I turn in on it will read zero. I can unplug the unit only if the backup battery is registering something - and powering on and off gives different readings. I have cleaned the contacts and done all the 'housekeeping' steps that I can think of for the backup battery.
In any event, I'll use it plugged in in the house and will be very careful whenever I unplug it. I will make do.
Thank you to everybody who offered suggestions - I am most grateful to the mobilitysite (and Chris) for always being willing to help when these problems arise.
