I just got my Axim today and am currently going thru the 4 hour ritual charging time.

My question is whether it is worth it to install the D Pad patch? I came to the Axim from the Hewlett Packard HP548 Jornada which never had one of the directional pads anyway. I'm used to using the Jog dial and the Enter key there for most of my applications where I need to scroll and select.

Is the D Pad used mostly for game playing?

The Dpad patch allows pressing the center of the Dpad to act like an "Enter" key. Pressing the jog switch on the side does the same thing. I found the HP difficult to press streight down without pressing up or down. The Ax is much easier.

Without the patch, the Dpad turns the display backlight on without activating the "enter" function. Having installed th patch, I find that sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't.

There are times when I wish I could enable and disable the d-pad fix on the fly! Overall, I appreciate having the enter function on the d-pad. You can use the d-pad to navigate menus and then push it in to select a menu item. Personally, I don't use the d-pad in a game, I'm afraid to abuse the little button, it might fall off.
