Mad Axim serial port and Terminal Emulation troubles

Every time I try to connect to a vt-100 terminal with the serial port it just doesn't work. The same thing happends with all software. It just sits there at the terminal screen with the cursor flashing. I know it's connecting because if I connect with the terminal software then power down the Axim and let it turn itself on I get like 2 lines of data from the terminal but that's it.

Does anyone else have this problem? Does the Axim just not support this kind of connection?

Thanks

DTE connections with the Axim do work.

If you supply more information, I'm sure someone can help you.

Namely:

What serial cable are you using?

What terminal apps have you tried?

I used PocketTTY and ZModem. I have the Axim serial cable connected to a M/M Gender Changer connected to a Null Modem Adapter connected to a M/M Gender Changer connected to a Serial Cable connected to the Device. I couldn't find a M/M Null Modem Adapter anywhere hence the 2 Gender Changers. I've synced with serial cable so I know that's not the problem.

Thanks for the quick response.

Wow, that's alot of connectors.

I'm trying to remember, and am pretty sure thst most standard DTE devices do NOT need null modem adaptors.

I think my DTE connections are DELL cable directly to DTE device.

I actually tried it without the Null Modem adapter and got nothing. Any special steps I need to take or should it just work? Maybe it's the Null Modem adapter?

Sorry, I'm connecting to a UTEC (User Tunable Engine Computer). It's for my Subaru WRX. Others have supposedly connected from PocketPC PDA's without a problem using the Null Modem Adapter and serial sync cable. That's why I jumped to the conclusion it was a problem with the Ax.

I really appreciate the quick responses.
Thanks

Interesting . . .

I'm guessing that the WRX is not standard RS-232 and so you might be suffering from the same problems as those who've tried to interface with GPS systems.

The issue is that the DELL serial cable plays an integral part in setting the proper RS-232 signal levels (The box on the cable). This box has an ASIC which gets it's power from the device the cable is hooked up to (not the Axim).

There is a clever solution (if this is your problem) that was posted previously on this site:

http://www.wormley.com/axim/

I would recommend you scope or measure with a DVM (if possible) the DTR line and see if this is indeed your problem.

Instead of using the battery solution, try one of these:

http://www.zytrax.com/tech/layer_1/cables/heavy.htm

The reason it may not be working is that the Axim requires RTS and CTS to be high, or it also requires the DSR, DCD, and DTR to be high as well.

Chances are that the device you are trying to connect to only supports tx, rx, and gnd. This is certainly the case on other devices with simple serial interfaces like Garmin GPS devices.

Cheers

And, for more info on the Axim serial interface (and other PDA interfaces), I found this site:
