I have an old HP Jornada 548 and am considering buying a Dell Axim to upgrade. My question is this - will the CF cards that I bought for my Jornada work in the Dell Axim? I have a 64MB memory card, a 256MB memory card, a 56K modem and a Socket modem card that connects my Jornada to my cell phone. The Jornada has a CF Type I connector, so my cards and modems are all of the type 1 form factor. From what I've read, the Axim has a CF Type II connector. I read on a website somewhere that a CF type I card will fit into a CF Type II connector, since the only difference is that the card is a little thinner. I called Dell's customer support to confirm this, but the lady I talked to said no, you must have a type II card to use in the type II connector.
Does anyone out there have any direct experience with this? Has anyone tried using a type I memory card or modem in their Axim? Did it work? Any problems?

I haven't tried it myself yet...
But the lady on the phone was definetely wrong.... The CF Type II spec is fully backwards compatible with the Type 1 spec... The cards will fit, the device will be able to access the card... Only possible problem would be if there was no driver support for the card, but that's independant of Type 1 or 2. This is from www.compactflash.org: "The only difference between CF Type I and CF Type II cards is the card thickness. CF Type I is 3.3 mm thick and CF Type II cards are 5mm thick. A CF Type I card will operate in a CF Type I or CF Type II slot. A CF Type II card will only fit in a CF Type II slot. The electrical interfaces are identical." Desi

Steve70592 - The memory cards will work fine. The 56K and Socket modem cards may need PocketPC 2002 drivers, which you might be able to download from the card manufacturers' websites. If you do need the drivers and you have them, then you can install them by using ActiveSync. Hope this helps.

A "Type II" CF interface on a device (like your axim) by default means that it will run BOTH Type I and II cards. It is backwards compatable. (But note that a "Type I" interface on older machines can only run Type I cards, not Type II)
