Broken AXIM display!

Yes, the ultimate of all boo-boos. Dropped my Axim crossing the street, stepped on it mid-stride and cracked the screen. The unit turns on, but you can't tap or select anything. The wonderful Dell support/repair response is "Buy a new one". I tracked down an OEM replacement display through PocketPCTechs but it's $150 US on a base $200 PDA.

Does anyone know of any other sources for replacement LCD displays? Or, anywhere I can buy a returned/dead/non-functional AXIM for cheap that I could salvage the screen from?

You're in luck then, it's just a dead digitizer, this is a do-it-yourself $50 job. :)

Watch the ads above for repairing screens or search the Dell Axim section of Ebay for 'screen'.

I wasn't so lucky with mine, my LCD died too, not just the digitizer. :(

You were right, it was just the digitizer. I bought the replacement one thru PalmMedicCanada, the Canadian affiliate for gethitech (or was it PDAParts?). $100.00 Canadian plus shipping, arrived within 2 days. However, after I installed it, now the digitizer doesn't seem to work! Before the image displayed fine, just the glass was cracked. Now the screen lights up as a grey/white blank screen, no sign of the windows/dell splash screen. Just sits there blank, sometimes makes a chime sounds, then turns itself off after 30 seconds. Any ideas? Did I short something out during my digitizer install?

I replaced the digitizer on one of my Axims and found that with the unit apart, it worked just fine, but when I put the case back on and tightened the screws, I got the same problem. Case OFF...works fine, Case ON...gray screen.

I tracked the problem down to a metal bezel that is the last part of the LCD/Digitizer "component". Apparently the new digitizer was just a tad thicker than the OEM digitizer, and this bezel was pressing down all-the-way-around the edge of the screen and totally baffeling the digitizer circuitry.

I left the metal bezel off, put it back togeher, tightened the screws, and voila........works perfect, doesn't jiggle or wiggle (and I generally like a bit of wiggle & jiggle!), or slop around, and I haven't had to realign the screen since initial reboot.
