D-link Dcf660w

I bought one of these cards via the Best Buy rebate special. After the first install it worked like a charm. However, after taking the card out and later replacing it, it asked me to identify the card. I took it out and put it back in several times; on about the fifth time the light came on and it worked again. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers many many times to no avail. The card works great when it does work, but it doesn't seem to be hotswappable unless you reinstall the whole thing. Has anyone had better/worse experiences with the card?

I have that same card and have no trouble that you are having.
My router is also a D-link DI614+

Well my connectivity with my router is not what's wrong- that works great. The problem is the interface between the card and my axim. I have to plug it in several times for the axim to recognize that the card is a WNIC.

SimonCrux - did you load the drivers for the card onto the Axim? I have the DCF-660W also and haven't had that problem - knock on wood. At first I did have a problem with the signal, but that was fixed by changing channels.

I also have the DCF-660W and report no problems.
FYI...there new drivers available for it as of late Jan 2003.

ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Wireless/DCF660W/Drivers/

They add a bunch more tabs to do "stuff".

...but I havnt been able to find an updated user guide to fully explain the new features.

good luck!

I downloaded and installed the updated driver from DLink's FTP site also. Why doesn't DLink ever include/post a readme of what's new with their updates???

I've got most of the tabs figured out, so I could attempt to explain what some of them do.

OK Iceman... I've done some experimentation of my own, but I'd be interested in a short summary of your take on the following new TABs:
-Profile
-ApBrowser
-SiteSurvey

I'm most pleased with the new Profile TAB:
Profile is S W E E T - gives the ability to store various settings (e.g. Home, WEP-Off, etc) so that you can switch between access points without having to re-do all you settings. :D

Also, my About Page now reads:
Network Driver - Ver 0.3.5
Config Util - Ver 2.0.0
Filmware - Ver 1.3.6

Just curious. Does yours read the same?

Thanks!

BTW, I called D-Links tech support today and opened up a case file for them to update their product manual to cover the new features.

Hey Nomar - My tabs are (left to right): Status, Profile, Config, Security, IP, Link, AppBrowser, SiteSurvey, About.
My About page reports the same version numbers as you posted.

The Profile tab is a very nice tool, it lets me easily switch settings between different WLANs.
The ApBrowser tab is a simple WAP detection tool. If there are WAPs near you that are broadcasting the SSID, it'll show up in this tab. I setup two WAPs with a different SSID and channel on each, and when they were setup to broadcast the SSID, ApBrowser found it. As soon as I turned off the broadcast though, ApBrowser didn't see them any more - which makes sense to me.
The SiteSurvey tab is is another nice tool. When I first got the CF card, I was getting a weak signal, even though my laptop with another DLink card said it was good. So I used SiteSurvey to find a different (stronger) channel to use, I now get a good signal on the Axim and excellent on the laptop! If they didn't have this tab, I'd have to try all the wireless channels.

I should contact DLink also and ask them for an updated manual just so there's more than one request for it! :)

Hmm New Drivers for D-Link 660w

I just down loaded the new drivers from the D-Link site. Tried to install on my ax but when I tap on the DCF icon in settings nothing happens. I also have 2 listings for the card in the network adapters. When I remove the d-link program it still shows one d-link adapter installed. I can reload the old drivers and the card works fine. How do I remove the d-link card from the adapters list. Any Ideas?:rolling:

You have to remove the old DCF-660 program/driver, then reboot (soft-reset) the Axim before installing the new driver. To remove the program/driver, go to Start > Settings > Remove Programs.

Hope this helps. :)

I may have the same prob as you voodoo; the D-Link is listed in my Network Adapters folder, yet the software is not installed and does not show up under Remove Programs. I have performed several soft boots. The adapter does work occasionally even without the software. When I installed the drivers again, clicking on the D-Link icon in Settings just causes the screen to flash as though it was about to load but then jumps back to the Settings folder.

Thats the problem I had. I also had a problem after removing the drivers. When reloading the old drivers I got an error message telling me that the drivers were in use or in rom and to shut down the program before installing. For some reason a .dll file was left on the ax. I had to remove this with Total Comander because I coudnt find the file in file explorer.
I also sent this problem to D-Link and the response I got was no help. I dont even think they read my email because they asked me to send more info that I had already sent in my first email. I havent tried icemans suggestion yet but will give it a shot later today.

I uninstalled the new drivers and installed the original ones. Now I can get into the D-Link tab again but I still have the same connectivity problems (had to unplug/replug 5 times before it worked). I'm thinking of reformatting and starting over with the 2.00 drivers. Is there a new build of PocketPC 2002 over the one preinstalled on the Axim?

If you really want to, you could perform a hard reset on the Axim that restores everything back to the way it came out of the box. That's the equivalent of formatting and reinstalling the OS.

Grr.. just finished a hard reset and installed the card's drivers (2.00) right away. Still no dice. It barely even recognizes the card anymore. Also I can't get into the D-link control panel in Settings because it just makes the screen flicker instead. Maybe I have a faulty card...
