Windows Media Player
I have owned my Axim 5 for a few months and do not find it
user friendly, (although it's probably me) I did have to send my first Axim back to Dell as it completely died on me. - I can't even figure out how to load music into the windows media program. I wish I had bought the Palm Tungston T... Help, please!

I'm assuming you already have Windows Media Player 9 series installed on your computer and have some songs compiled into a play list. If not, the first thing you want to do is to download this newest version of software from the microsoft site.
(by the way, there are lots of posts on this site about this, so if my directions turn out to be too vague or confusing just search this site)
Step 1: Sync your Axim up to your computer.
Step 2: Open the computer's media player and you will see tabs on the left side. Click on the one that says "Copy to CD or Device".
Now you will see a screen that has a left and a right side. On the left side, Step 3: pick the songs you want to copy from your play list.
Step 4: This is where I recall it gets tricky. If your actively synced up you should be able to pick from a drop down list where you want the songs to copy to. I pick my CF card.
Step 5:Then click start copy which is a red button at the top right.
There is also a step between step 3 and step 4 where you can make the copy size smaller to hold more songs. I did this a while ago and forget the specifics. I will get back on and add these steps if I can recall the details, or find the magazine article I got them from - also - search for these details as I've posted them before. Even without this step you can copy songs, they will just be large.
Hope this info is enough to get you started.

Here's another thread you may find helpful:

By the way, I really love this feature and play songs all the time at work to save my sanity, so I hope you can get it to work!

Thanks for the help with Windows Media Player - I was able to load a song onto the computer and then, following your directions, copy part of it onto my Axim 5 - Still am not sure how to organize songs - I seem to have so many folders from previous attempts to load songs and other informaiton - I think maybe the best thing for me is to perform a hard reset and start the whole process over.... Is this a good idea?? So often it asks me to form another partnership when I thought I already had one - I am trying to sync with a desktop at home and a laptop at school...
Is there any hope for me??

I'm so glad to have helped! You should be fine! If you go to your Axim Windows Media Player and see where it says playlist at the bottom. I believe they should all be listed there and should play just fine. You can also go to tools and pick shuffle, for variety.
I can also see the songs listed in my Axim's File Explorer ( Go to Home > file explorer > my documents. (In my case I look in the CF card file > my documents) and they are in a list there. If you don't have them all together how you like them, you should be able to cut and paste them within the file explorer program.
Eventually, I'd like to create subfolders and organize my "upbeat music to work-out to" all in the same folder, I have yet to master how to do that though. I assume I can just create another folder, but I'm not sure.
PS: I don't think you need to do a hard reboot to resolve organizing the songs nor do I understand how a hard reboot would work to help - besides they scare me and I wouldn't do one unless absolutely necessary because of the problem with the partnership question, and usually any problems I have (ocassional freeze up) are resolved through a soft reboot.

playlists
The best way to organise your music is by using playlists created from within the Windows media player on the Axim.
If you create folders for each music type you will find that Windows media player will ignore the folders and just display the contents. Its only usefull if you are going to play individual songs by using the file manager, however it is a tidy way to do things.
Don't forget to put all the music in folders in My Documents
You really want to turn any mp3's you have into WMA files so that you get twice the amount of music !

What are some options if Windows Media Player does no detect your Axim. I have recently upgraded to WMP 9 and now I can't get it to recognize my device. The old WMP auto detected my device and mp3 converting and saving to my Axim was a snap.
Is this something easiely remedied or do I have to reinstall WMP9?

I'm not sure if you may be already saying this, but I'm thinking if you sync your Axim to your computer prior to opening WMP 9, (wait till has the green light and says it's "connected" and syncronized"), then when you open WMP 9 it will see it. Have you tried it that way?

Thanks Just Jen, that worked. I feel kinda silly that I didn't try that but I"ve been saving music to my Axim for about a year and never had to connect in any sort of order before.
Thanks Again

If you want to convert your MP3's down in size and change them to WMA files, follow Just Jen's step by step to step 3 then click on TOOLS>,OPTIONS>COPY MUSIC. On this screen there is a COPY SETTINGS section, under format pick WINDOWS MEDIA AUDIO. This will convert the MP3 into WMA, and if you want to change the size of the file- locate the slide bar at the bottom of that same screen. I use the 64 Kbps setting any smaller and some songs don't play right, but this setting is still of FM radio quality and I can fit 150 to 200 songs on a 256mb card.
Good Luck

Is it true that WMP 9 comes with PPC 2003? If that's the case, I guess I don't need to upgrade.

WMP 9 is a desktop program not an PPC program. Mine came with Windows XP -I think.

My yesterdays post is probably in error. I have PPC 2002 A04 and this includes WMP 8.5 on the Axim.
I do not know what WM 2003 version of WMP is included.
Sorry.
