I am looking for ssome user feedback on the built in microphone. when i record a voice note and play it back (using headphones, so it is not a speaker problem) the playback sounds like a record player (i.e. it is crackly and seems like there are 'scratches' in the recording. are axims just poor voice recorders or does this sound like malfunctioning hardware?

Mine sounds the same. Probably just crappy hardware built in to safe on production costs. Its unfortunate to.

Please note:
Under ther Settings-->Microphone screen there is a slider that allows you to control the gain of the input. In other words, tinker with this setting and see if it helps to clear up some of the interference. :D

well, I spoke with dell tech support (after holding for about 2.5 hours and several incorrect extensions) and their answer was "it is designed to operate that way". that is consistent with the comment from foodawg. too bad...i hope nobody buys it for that purpose...i had an audiovox maestor previously, and the voice recorder was crystal clear, which is probably why i had high expectations for the axim.

Mine does the same thing, even with headphones. I have tried it before and the recording was clean, but now it is crackling. mmmmmm When I know it has sounded fine, it is tough to accept a "that's just the way it is...." type answer. I will ask tech support and hope I don't get an answer like that.

I'll let everyone know what happens

cheers

Try playing with the sampling rate (Settings/Input/Options). Some quick tests I did showed noticable improvement in results. At the expense of file size of course. 22kHz 16 bit mono worked well.

Yep, Microphone gain set third setting from right and voice recording format set to

11,025 Hz, 16 bit, Mono (22 kb/s) seems to be best compromise. Produces a pretty darn good recording thought some crackling does show up once in a while.

Also , there's a freeware MP3 recorder application for Pocket PC named NoteM that ALWAYS produces a top quality recording. That's what I'm using now......
