No sync on USB, continuous retries; IR syncs perfectly

I have a strange syncing problem: I have an X5-400 with PPC2003 (upgraded from 2002) with AS 3.7.1; when I connect the Ax using a USB cable; Activesync continuously tries to establish connection (kind of cycles through the make connection) - no connection ultimately gets established.

However, it connects perfectly over IR.

I tried the following without success:
1. Changed USB cables
2. Tried Syncing with other Computers having AS 3.7.1
3. Upgraded PPC2002 to PPC2003 (this used to happen with PPC2002 too)

The USB on all computers seems to be working OK - have tested them using a USB Camera.

Any suggestions, pointers to what might be the problem? Am desperate - since the IR connection is very slow.

I got the same problem with my new x3i. After consulting with Dell's reps several times, they had to admit it is a failing axim. Fortunately, it's in 30-day return warranty so I got it replaced.

If you are running a software firewall you might have to disconnect or disable it in order to sync your Axim using USB. I use McAffee Firewall and I have to do this to achieve a successful sync.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Peter123.
I am not running a firewall.
Like Meshworld says, after spending hours on the phone with Dell Support they confirm that the USB port may be malfunctioning. The cant repair it since it is out of warranty - my best bet is to buy a new one - which I dont know if I want to. I'll probabely go for a smartphone.

Cheers.
