first of: HA HA! Now, i'm am not making fun of what happened to you, god only knows how many times somthing similar to that has happend to me before. Now for the helpful part; IF your warrenty is still good, try and get a new one. You can start from scratch BUT i would get a good third party backup program that u can install on AXIM, this will alow you to make backups on a SD or CF making recovering from this simple. Make sure u do a backup once a week is you can. I would also from now on backup ur outlook databases.

It's only now that I realize that instead of hoping that this was a simple glitch if I would have contacted Dell Support, I might have gotten a replacement PDA. Instead, now my warranty is gone (I pre-ordered my Axim when they were first announced in 2002), and Dell Tech Support is showing no support at all! They seem to be just throwing out ideas that I could come up with myself (like replacing both batteries at my own expense, upgrading bios, etc.)So, if any of you have had the same problem, and have figured out the cause of it, or even better yet a solution, PLEASE post here, or email me directly. Thanks a ton, KK.

I had to post... I had a hard reset for no reason a few months ago, and unfortunately had no backup other than Outlook data. (me dumb then).
The other day, I turned on my X5 in the morning to see what my appointments were like, and got that wonderful Dell startup screen. In the back of my mind I'm thinking "no no no" and sure enough... "Tap to set up..." I started reloading software and during the process I unplugged the charger for a moment and the X5 shuts off with a quick glimpse of the power warning. It makes no sense as the X5 has been charging for a couple hours. Now I'm afraid the battery is fried. I start playing with the charging cable, replace the backup battery (even though it says 100%), and keep getting the same problem. Hmmm... I press one of the application buttons and all of the sudden the X5 turns off?!?!?! I duplicate this a number of times. Now I am really confused. I pick up the device, no power connected, and feel the battery shift slightly on the back, which it does from time to time, but this time the screen goes blank! Problem found! Turns out that after 15 months of use, there was some build-up on the battery contacts and although it was not visible, I cleaned them thoroughly and I can no longer duplicate the problem. Also, now I keep current backups! Keith

I'm glad to hear it wasn't just mine that did this stupid hard reset thing. This past weekend i was at a hotel so i used my x5 as an alarm clock and of course it went off at the right time and everything was great. Great that is until i tried to cut off the alarm! It wouldnt shut up and the power button kept blinking green. Well i did 2 soft resets real quick and still nothing, so i decided i would take off the battery (done it many times before) and then stuck it right back on. Well when i cut it back on the alarm had stopped but it said "do you want to erase the memory" i hit the inbox button for cancel and what does it do!!!! It erased EVERYHING! A years worth of finances down the tube!!! I called support hoping that there may be some sort of memory retrieval and of course i was heart broken. All they could say was sorry!
Since this little insadent i have learned that backing up isnt so bad

This happened to me twice in a two week span a couple of months ago. One thing I noticed, just before it happened, was a prompt for me to reformat the CF card that I had in the slot. I was keeping the card in the slot at all times. I had encountered this message quite frequently, usually after I accessed something on the card and then done a soft reset. I had installed a game on the PDA, and due to the size of the game had installed directly to the CF card. After plaing the game one day, my Dell locked up, I did a soft reset, and instead of coming to the normal screen, it performed a hard reset. My last backup had been done about 9 months earlier. After restoring everything, about a week later I received the same problem. Luckily I had done a backup after the first incident. I've since removed the card, and have not had any issues since then. The card itself was a SanDisk 64MB card that came free with my Axim when I ordered it a year ago. I'm guessing, due to process of elimination, that the fault had something to do with the card itself.

I also use sprite, its GREAT. USE IT! BUY IT! WORSHIP IT!
Anyway, I spoke to my contact at Dell and he said he would try to bring it up when he goes to Round Rock in a few days. He helped me get my new Axim from dell after they sent me 4 bad ones. (long story but if u want to know more just ask). Anyway he consulted me about a week ago about buying a new Axim and i told him to hold off until this is all fixed. Though this mostly happens with the X5 i have read of a few cases involng the X3, i think dell needs to fix this.

Resets and loose battery
I too was having a lot of trouble with my X5 resetting itself. It seemed to be spontaneous. One time when it happened, I realized that my battery had a little bit of play. I searched these forums with the loose battery keyword, and found a suggestion to place a folded business card behind the battery.
Voila! This stopped the battery wiggle, and eliminated my resets!
