Do you have ICbar or WISbar running? I was having the exact same problem and found a thread where someone said disabling WISbar solved the problem.
When I disabled ICbar on my X5 (recently upgraded to PPC2003) the problem went away. I'm playing with ICbar now to see if I can figure out why this is.
I have Icbar and I don't have the problem. One caution: USB is very susceptible to interference, including internal interference inside the PC cabinet. For most uses, that sensitivity is not a problem, but Activesync uses TCP/IP to set up a virtual connection through the USB port, which makes it sensitive to minor disruptions in the connection. One thing I have done that seems to hold the connect in place is to use dotPocket's Desktop to mirror my Axim onto my desktop and now it never disconnects.
disabling Wisbar didn't fix it. I am thinking that there has got to be some kind of timeout setting on Windows. Ever mapped a drive then go look into My Computer if you haven't used it for awhile and it shows 'disconnected' even though you know that the drive mapping is still alive. Simply reconnecting (or opening the mapped drive) refreshes that timer again. Maybe something similar is happening here.
Here is a link to a registry change that might help.. I am going to try this next

Ok...I'll try this on my PC at work tomorrow morning. It's Win2k and I upgraded my PocketPC to 2003 around the same time I did Service Pack 4...maybe that has something to do with it.
I will say this...when ICbar is off I don't disconnect. When I start ICbar again the disconnecting starts again. Hopefully this will fix it because I love ICbar.
I am using Wisbar, but this problem started before I installed Wisbar. The problem started when I upgraded from PW2002 to PW2003. I don't see how the problem could be in the laptop machine.
Ok...I tried this also, and it appears to have solved the problem. I did it first thing this morning and rebooted. I had one drop right after I put the Axim in the cradle, but after that it has stayed connected all day today. I still have ICbar running, also.
I never had this problem until upgrading to PPC2003 either, but this appears to have fixed it. Anyone else who tried this registry change still having problems?
I think this is the correct fix. After I thought about it, I realized this was NOT happening on myWinXP machine, and the KB article referenced above does not apply to Windows XP - only 2000 and 2003 server and 2000 Professional (2000 Pro was the OS on the machine I was having the problem on.
It must have been a coincidence that turning off ICbar solved the problem for me, since others have posted saying it didn't solve the problem for them.
Hey - I'm happy. AS is staying connected and I've got my ICbar.
I'm going on 23+ hours now of no disconnects. I am satisfied.
I've done everything you guess tried. I have no idea why it won't work. It d/c's when syncing as well. avantgo no longer works. it also happened after i upgraded to wm2003. I am using XP and AS 3.7.1. It never times out on my 2000 laptop
I tried this fix on a Windows 2000 machine and it had no effect. I didn't see any detrimental effect either. I have since found a link at microsoft.com that talks about USB devices not being recognized and I have installed the download from that link. It is too soon to tell if it works, but I will let you know after I have had it installed a week or so.

Well, that didn't work either. Has anyone had permanent success getting their Ax to stay connected to a Windows 2000 machine after they upgraded to WM2003?
