Axim crashes my PC

Installed Dell last night on PC (Win98/SE ). If I take Axim off of cradle and then put it back on cradle, it crashes my computer. Also, when I installed applications on the Axim, and the Axim had to reset itself, it crashed my PC then as well. Any insight on how to fix these problems would be greatly appreciated. I don't know if this is an Activesync issue or what.

I think you are right guessing that it is Activesync. I would uninstall it and reinstall.

Let us know how you do.

There are really 2 things happening when you do that..

When you insert (or reset) the Axim into the cradle, 2 things happen on the PC...

First, the USB controller senses a device, recognizes it, and readies the driver..

Second, Activesync, polling USB (and serial and IR), recognizes the device and starts running..

How to tell which?

Uninstall Activesync.

Insert the Axim. If it dies, it's a USB/driver issue. If not, it's Activesync.

Question Similar issue

This sounds familiar. I'm running 2000 and have issues generally when synching. This only happens about half the time....
ActiveSynch shows a little exclamation mark in the system tray and then my USB mouse dies. I have to reboot to get it back. Anyone have any ideas? I'm sure it's a USB issue rather than ActiveSynch but I don't want to lose my mouse.

It's gotta be USB issues. I uninstalled Activesync and now every time I put the Axim in the cradle I get either a PC freeze or the screen goes black. Either way I have to reboot. This is really annoying. Do I have to update the driver? The one I'm using is dated 1-24-03.

I think it's more in how W98 deals with USB stuff. You REALLY ought to upgrade to W2K, or even XP.
I use W2K pro, and it just NEVER crashes.

At the least, try an updated USB expansion card first.

For everyone that is having USB problems - first *make sure you are not using a hub!* Be CERTAIN that the Axim is plugged directly into the main USB port on the back of your computer.

After that, make SURE you have ActiveSync 3.6 installed. If you only have 3.5, stop now and go here

If that still doesn't work, check the motherboard you are using and see if there are any updates. These are sometimes a bit tricky (you have to load the update onto a floppy and then boot from the floppy to flash/rewrite the new motherboard information) but it can solve a LOT of problems on a lot of systems with USB problems.

Interesting..I have the same problem as well. Buy any chance is your cradle hooked up to a USB hub? My cradle was. I had to by pass the USB hub and have it sync via my laptop.

I have the same problem. Funny thing is my Compaq IPAQ (with Activesync 3.5 ) never gave me these problems. After endless hours on the phone with Dell techies I am convinced DELL's cradle is causing the crash

Hmmm... I think I'm going to get a regular USB cable and try synching that way. I'll post when the cable comes in what result I get.
