I've seen discussion of modifications to the D-PAD to give it
a better feel (less mushy and more accurate).

I'd like to do this, but the pictures are no longer available
in the thread and actually refer to a different modification:

Has anyone done this? Is 3M mounting tape special, e.g. very
thick, or can any mounting or carpet tape work? The double-sided
tape I've found is pretty thin - not much thicker than scotch
tape.
