Beaming
Can anyone out there validate that the Dell Axim's IR really sucks or is it just mine?

Axim's IR really sucks. IMO, it is the device's worst feature.
I dare someone to claim it is great.
I really wish it were better, but I won't do much complaining for the price I paid and the other great things it does.

Yup...it sucks. The IR on my old Palm Vx was much better.
I can send from the Ax to my Vx no problem (except nothing understands MS formats... :D ), but I can only get the Ax to receive from my Vx about 1/10th of the time.
Chris...

I haven't had problems with IR. I've beamed contacts with Palm, iPAQ and have also successfully synced with my Laptop thru the IR Ports. Pretty cool with no cords to hook up. Sometimes I have to do soft reset to get the power button light to stop flashing but no complaints with it being recognized and beaming so far.

IR connection & beaming
Activesync connect my Axim 400 to my Dell Inspiron 4150 with no problems. Also prints to my HP printers IR port flawlessly. The Axim was made 3-7-2003, maybe DELL or Microsoft fixed the IR problems some of you have had. I would contact them for a Bios upgrade or your other product manufacturer for an upgrade.
Good luck....

Those of you what use your IR with no problem. How far apart is the axim from the device comunicating with it?
What I have found is that the IR seems to have a rather narrow beam witdh. If your not almost directly inline with the reciveing unit it wont communicate.
Disclamer: The only thing I have used the IR port to date is using PDAwin.com's TV Remote V5.1

IR distance
About 12 to 20 inches. But the IR ports on my laptop and printer are about 1/2" by 7/8" which is almost 3.5 times lager than the Dell Axim IR port.

Yesterday after several tries I managed to sync with my IBM laptop. I also beamed to a Sony Clie that is using palm os 4.0. I cannot ever beam to my palm with os 3.5. Today it will not sync by IR at all. I think maybe it is in the settings/drivers as the IR is easliy detected by an IR detection program on my palm. I think It just does not beam the correct information.

IR connection & beaming
It's amazing, I clicked the Internet option in Activesync after using the Axim's Activesync to connect by IR and it does connect to my Lan connection through my laptop. But you have to keep the IR ports lined up and within about 24" of each other.
On the Axim it's, Start/Activesync/Tools/Connect via IR

infrared beaming
Dell has indicated in its users' forum that there is a problem with infrared beaming. A flash upgrade to address the problem is in the works and may be available in April
