Serial port on Axim X5 ???

Hello.
I want to buy a DELL Axim, but need a serial interface to connect my GPS receiver (Haicom HI-203E serial).
It seems that the Axim X5 has an embedded serial port and that it is available on the bottom connector.
Can I use the "serial synchro cable" sold by DELL to connect my GPS receiver to the PDA ?
Is the serial port recognized as a standard "com" port by WinCE so I can use it for any application ?
Any help welcome !
Fabrice.

Hello Fab,

Before I got a CF GPS card I was using a Magellan Sportrak Map handheld GPS unit as my receiver for use with my Axim 5. The connection use the Dell serial connector to the bottom port. BUT, I had to get a Null Modem Connector to fit between the Dell cable and the cable from the Magellan. In this case it was a double male connector, as both the Dell and Magellan cables ended in female plugs. The set-up worked perfectly, but was cumbersome of course.

My electronics knowledge is minimal, but I believe the Null Modem enables the sending wire from the GPS to connect to the receiving wire if the Dell, and vice-versa. This you may already know!

Hoping this helps anyway.

Cheers.

WR.

PC-Mobile sells cables that work quite well for connecting various GPS units to PocketPCs. I have one myself, but don't use it as much since getting a Tomtom Car Kit from Adventure GPS Products.

For "jcll2002", it's not cross posting, I just want to ask different questions to diffrent Axim users, aa X5 is not an X30...
