Just couple from my experience. Awhile back I had big problems with HP USB printers. I eventually found an article on the HP site that pointed to a USB driver iissue. Something like, if the loaded driver ended with AD/AH or something like that I had to force windows to use the AA/AB driver. To find it you have to uncheck "show compatible devices"

Also, without rhym or reason, I have always had better luck with the USB ports at the rear.

Did you encounter the high speed device in a low speed port error and if you are using a hub is it powered.

As far as the rest goes - Though it's probably like talking to a brick wall - mention Accepted-MAC-Only filtering + 128bit + (etc) and compare it to Joe Sneaky hooking up a laptop with a simple patch cord. WiFi can be plenty secure if you do it right.
Yep, it is a brick-wall issue. I've been a WiFi user and installer for about three years now and I've advocated all of these things but I just get the old blank stare treatment. That, and the fact that there just isn't a big need for cutting-edge technology here. We're a newspaper and just about everything done inside the building is handled via the old fashioned methods: cat-5 and those gold inner-office mail envelopes ;)

Didn't find anything like this with IBM's tech pages but I'll keep looking. Thanks for the tip.

There are six at the rear and two at the front. We tried 'em all, with the same results.

No, this is the only USB device on the system so we figured we could get away w/o a hub. However, that's an excellent point...perhaps connecting it through a USB hub would make it visible. I'll give that a shot.

I believe you cannot initiate a partnership through WiFi. It has to have that first connect through the USB port. Then you can establish the WiFi connection.

Jfarr you might also try using the device manager and removing ALL USB devices, then reboot and let it find the Ax in the cradle.

I gather this is the first use of the USB on this desktop, right? Have you tried any other USB devices in the ports to verify that the ports actually work?

I went and found the document from HP I mentioned so here some more info from it. I found it last July so some of it maybe dated but I have used it to solve several quiirky USB problems. It doesn't have an ID number but the title is
"HP LaserJet Series Printers - Troubleshooting USB Chipset Issues"

It's 17 pages of valuable USB troubleshooting techniques
Affected Chipsets covered
Intel 82371, 82801
VIA prior to April 2000 and same vintage ALI
AMD 756 Chipset
SIS 7001 USB Host Controller

They do mention that in many cases a powered USB hub will correct some problems

I'm out of here now.

Another Idea

Got to thinking...

How about trying an IRDA USB dongle?

Active Sync WILL sync via IRDA without a pre-established partnership.

Could be worth a try...

FIXED!!!! HAHAHAHHA!

It turns out that I have the same exact PC that he did, right down to the last digit in the model number. I compared the USB entries in Device Manager on mine (working, with an Axim X30) to his (not working with his X5). These PCs have five USB host controllers in them, and they were all named the same except the last one.

On mine, that last controller was labeled "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller". His was something else that was radically different, but it called it "USB2". I switched it to the driver mine was using, and it found the Axim immediately.

So now I can get another computer-illiterate suit off of my back and can return to my actual job :)

Thanks for the direction you guys gave me.
