Hi,
I wanted to update the ROM of my AXIM X5 Advanced but it stopped at 1/12 2/12 3/12 I had to reset the PDA and now... have only a partial installation. Since the "bootloader-trick" didn't work (X5 just boots everytime into the partial installation) I copied the "System Update.EXE" and the .IMG onto a CF and managed to get a shortcut to the EXE from the HOME menu. But when I run the file it "completes" extrem fast from 1/12...12/12 and nothing as changed. I guess I need some unpacked IMG-Files. Does anybody have an idea where to get those? Maybe there is a chance to launch any kind of file explorer from the CF-card so I can copy these files to the temp folder... If anybody has some pocketpc explorer that could be run just by copying to a CF... Please help Michael

Please follow my guide, it resolves the 'partial install' when doing the boot loader:

Hi Tom61,
thanks for the link! I already read through this forum and found your link, hoping this procedure would save my X5. But my X5 doesn't do the bootloader trick. It always boots into the blue DELL screen but never does any bootloader trick. If you have any other solution or maybe the unpacked ROM files of any English ROM for the Advanced model, please let me know. Thanks Michael

It does work... I did it about 10 times before I could get the motions right. I did it in this order: 1. Hold the stylus in your left hand, and tilt the Axim to your right, so the power (the little green/red button) is to the right. 2. Position your fingers thusly: Left index finger on the TOP of the stylus and middle finger positioning tip of stylus against the reset button, and left thumb on the Contacts button (make sure it is the Contacts button). Next Right thumb on power button and right index finger on the Scroller. 3. At the same time, push in the reset and power, then the contacts and the scroller. You literally push the scroller into the Axim. 4. Release the Stylus (i let it fall on my desk) and the power button at the same time, BUT HOLD THE CONTACTS AND SCROLLER IN FOR 20 SECONDS. This is crucial. It will work. You will get a white screen. Best of luck...i am doing the same thing...i have to get a CF card reader tomorrow to make this work. Rich

Hi Rich...
thanks for the description. This is exactly how I was doing it after reading the howto... After releasing reset and power my X5 does: 1. Show the blue DELL screen 2. wait 5-7 seconds 3. give the "ding-dong" sound 4. show me a white screen with blue top "Start Button" + time 5. wait another 5-7 seconds 6. show me the "backup battery empty" sign left of clock 7. freeze there until I press "Start" 8. then show today screen and message "backup empty" I removed the backup battery so therfore the messages... but no bootloader trick ![]()

Yes... I removed the main battery every time before I tried. My wife also helped me getting all the buttons pressed at the same time but my f.... Axim always boots into the blue DELL screen.
I already ordered a new PDA - ASUS A716 because I really need it every day - but this dell thing sucks. Since there seem to be some more people getting stuck exactly at the 3/12 point... I think this is a general DELL problem. FYE... did you read my post on the dell forum... the dell guy said they don't have the unpacked ROM files (sure, they somehow packed semselves into the IMG file) and I should do a hard reset before I try to update... it would run better on a clean device This guy even didn't read that my device is already dead... Great service but as always... you get what you pay for ![]()

The IMG file is already unpacked. You don't need any other file on the CF card besides the IMG file.
The 3/12 problem occurred with an older version of the ROM. Maybe you have that old, buggy version? If I were you I'd try the bootloader procedure a few more times. It's a bit tricky.

Hi,
yes - for a "normal" ROM update the IMG file is unpacked. But once you perfom the update, the windows software installs an unpacked version of the IMG to the pocketpc's temp folder, and then runs the "system update.exe". The files are: 24MAPPS.nb0 (1792KB) 24MCONSUMER.nb0 (3074KB) BROWSING.nb0 (2816KB) COREAPPS.nb0 (3584KB) KERNEL.nb0 (2560KB) MISC_1.nb0 (2048KB) MISC_2.nb0 (2048KB) MISC_3.nb0 (2048KB) MISC_4.nb0 (512KB) OS.nb0 (2816KB) SHELL.nb0 (2048KB) SYNC.nb0 (1024KB) If I get all the unpacked files, I simply need to copy them to the temp folder on the X5 and then run the updater from a CF card. I have been trying the bootloader procedure 1002820 times and the rubber at the reset switch is almost perforated - no success. It always boots into the blue Dell screen. ![]()

OK, I now see what you mean by "unpacked". I think you should be able to find those files on your PC because the installer program creates them first on the PC's disk before copying them to the PPC.
I don't know why the bootloader procedure doesn't work for you. The only thing I can think of that you are doing something wrong, e.g. one of the four buttons is not being pressed or something. It might also be a bad electrical contact. Can you test for example somehow if the PPC actually detects it when you press the scroller inwards?

Sorry to hear that. If you want to, you could send it to me, with return postage, and I'll see if I can get it working. Might be some resolvable problem that I could add to the guide to help others out. Since you're getting a new PDA, not sure interested. LMK.
