BUB replacement not working

Heya guys,

I bought a used X5 that seems to have a problem with it's backup battery. I have tried 3 known-good batteries in the backup battery slot without success. When I say I have had no success, I mean that the power meter says 0% no matter what I do. Do I have to hard reset the device to make it see the new battery?

Does it say 0% all the time, or just occasionally? Occasional 0% is a known problem solved by soft reset, or by making sure the battery is making good, consistent contact in the pocket. If always 0%, then inspect the battery pocket to see if the side contact and little fingers on the bottom of the pocket are properly positioned to contact the battery. Some users have found that a small piece of paper, between the the battery and the cover, will push the battery more firmly against the contacts and reduce the 0% reports. Others have gently, gently, gently bent up the little fingers in the bottom of the pocket to make better contact with the battery.

HTH.

It always says 0%. I've tried re-positioning the pins and I can see they are making contact. I will try cleaning the contacts. Thanks for your input.

The contacts appear clean, I cleaned their edges a bit with a piece of sandpaper. Still 0% no matter what I do.

Silly question and I'll apologize for it in advance, but, are you putting the battery in with the right side up?

As a last ditch effort, I did a hard reset on the device. Hell, I even took it apart and cleaned the internal contacts on the BUB daughter board. This thing is disgusting inside. Whomever owned it before me must have worked this thing to death.

I had problems w/my BUB too...

After working fine for about a year, my BUB began to fluctuate dramatically. I'd wake up in the morning, turn off my Axim's alarm and then be greeted by the "Back up your stuff before you're screwed" message. I called Dell's tech support who walked me thru a ROM update - NO GO! Next time, they recommended I wipe the BOB with my shirt (probably hoping a genie would appear from the BOB and after a few wishes, I'd go away). Again, NO GO! On my third call, they said that I had completed all of the troubleshooting steps they knew for that issue (that's scary) and they'd be sending me a replacement (that's Dell code for Refurbished) Axim right away. Well, my refurb arrived with PPC 2002 (I had hoped they'd feel sorry for me and at least send me one the '03 upgrade) and all would be well if I was able to restore more than 81% of my backup from the CF card of my original. At this point, I have the choice of having a whacky BUB or losing 19% of stuff in memory! This BLOWS!!!

cant you make a new backup...if you still have your old axim, you should be able to just make a new back up, preferably using your computer, active sync will let you make backups. Then, restore it from that. However, and more likely, dell made you do a hard reset. Try the CF back up in your old axim just to make sure. Just so you know, if htey had sent it to you with 2k3, your backup would not have worked at all.

Make sure you have the ROM updates. That can make a difference in many cases.
