I appreciate all of the candid remarks about problems with the Sandisk 256 (and other) SD cards. I can't tell you how many hours I've spent loading and reloading my medical programs and other large books, only to find that they either did not load correctly or did load, but two or three tries later are completely unaccessible. I am a medical resident and need frequent quick access to my medical books. Sandisk has taught me that I cannot trust their memory cards.
Buy.com, however, has a wonderful return policy. I am returning the corrupt, worthless card, and purchasing a Viking 256 mb SD card. From what I've read, they seem to work well.
I just returned my 256 meg Sandisk SD card today. It got corrupted almost daily and no tools I tried could fix it. I agree that Buy.com really makes it easy to return. I will continue using Buy.com just because of their return system. However, I will never buy Sandisk again!
I picked up a Lexar card today and it feels way faster than the Sandisk card.
Never had a problem w/my 256 SD, which I never take out of my axim. I have some big files too. like the bmw films (3) etc...
In fact I was down to 50 mb on My 256. This was a big discussion on the PC passion site as well.
I brought up the fact that I never take my card out and wondered if handling the card a lot could have some adverse effect?
I also found a defrag program from www.softwinter.com
that I checked my card with. I was 65% fragmented and after I ran the defrag program (several hours on the 256!) the SD card seemed to load files and programs quicker... seems to make sense!

My card went south the first day I had it. I just took it out of the package and put it in the Axim.

As far as defragmenting. Using a USB or other reader/writing device, you can do it quicker and less possibility of errors. Make a copy of the card using the external reader/writer. format the card and copy the data from the PC back to the card. You will have contiguous data. Should only take 20 mins or less.
I don't think that acess times on the SD cards should make as much difference as a hard disc with actual hard having to physically move and acces the data.
just kidding! or is that what Sandisk customer service would say:crooked:
Never-the-less it looks like from the poll they have on going at pcpassion that more people (about 50% of polled) haven't had problems/and would re-purchase sandisk...
Not that I have any stake or interest in that company, BTW....

I have a 256MB sandisk for my axim and a 64MB sandisk for my Digi Cam and I have had 0 problems with either. I have another friend with a 128 he uses in his axim and it workd perfect for him too.
I got my Lexmark 256mb through ecost.com for $77 US! NO worry about duties or anything :)
That, combined with a Bluetooth dongle for my PC and let's just say I'm a happy scrappy camper!
Whooo!
Nick
I hope thats a Lexar card. I don't think Lexmark makes a printer small enough for that little slot. :D

I wanted mega space for just my MP3's that I wanted to travel with so I got the 1 gig-a-byte SanDisk card. I already had an IBM 1 gig-a-byte microdrive and love that for my camera but with the smaller battery I needed to save some juice. I've had zero problems with this SanDisk 1 gig-a-byte CF. I have never formated this, just popped it in out of the package and started copying files to it. I have had some issues with bad or corrupt files but I've had them in Main and Built-In storage with the same corrupt files. I usually transfer 60-80 megs at a time when uploading files to the AX. Unless someone could beat the price I'll probalby buy another one since this one works so well. I can pull it out and put it back in anytime and access any files I want. I've got 64 and 256 SanDisk cards that I used with my Canon camera before I bought the MicroDrive and they still work great, my daughter uses them in her AX, bought both of them at the same time. 400mhz units in January, 2003.
I bought the 256mb Sandisk with my Dell also. It has done everything but work as it should. It's deleted files, asked to be reformatted, even locked up my windows explorer in a card reader. I've tried other SDs in my Dell with no problem. But put my SD into anything other than its plastic case and who knows what will happen. HOWEVER, with one call to Dell, my replacement is on the way. Hopefully it was just a bad one (of several from the post) and my new one will be a good one.;)
Had my Sandisk 128 Mb SD card for about a week. Seemed to be working fine. Then, when I started copying some more mp3 files to the card, it crapped out on me....filled with empty directories. Then when I turned off the Axim, and turned it back on, it wanted to reformat it. I accepted, and it seemed to be working fine again for a couple of day. Then, while copying some more files to the card, it happened again. This time I reformatted with another card utility, and attempted to copy files to it again. And yet again, it failed. I returned the card to Staples, and bought a PNY card from Best Buy, and have never had a problem since.
All this too bad really, as I have always had fairly good luck with Sandisk cards. I'm not convinced it is completely Sandisks fault. But if switching the brand of card solves the problem, then that is the way it has to be.
