I got a SanDisk 256mb through Dell. What a piece of trash. It would not sync programs, it would not load files. I formatted the card in FAT16, FAT32, and every cluster size I could get my hands on. It would not work! The faults where all repeatable. Who ever are at fault here should step up and fix this mess. Even a 5% failure rate is unacceptable!

Sandisk 256 SD card - losing files

I got a SanDisk 256mb through Dell about a week ago. It shows "Total storage card memory: 241.13MB" - not what I expected.

I can't do a data backup of it.

I noticed that when I create folders on the SD card through my desktop PC and move files into them, the files disappear (do not cut and paste files like that!) Got around that by creating the folders on the Axim first.

Yesterday I took minutes at a meeting and stored the Word file on the SD card. Today, that entire folder is empty.

I tried a series of soft-resets with and without the card, but no luck. Finally, the Axim hard-reset (don't know how it did that, don't think I made it do it).

Don't have any problems with being asked to reformat the card.

Intend to return the card and try a different vendor.

I had similar problems with my disappearing files on my Sandisk early on due to the card not being formatted with a "My Documents" folder. Try formatting it using "Flash Format" w/FAT32, and "create a My Documents Folder".

Manually copy your SD Card contents to a folder on your PC frequently as your card may crap out on you again. (Mine did)

There is a lot more info on this site about SD cards, I was suprised to see a recent post in this thread more recent info is available.

That's a definition problem. The card manufacturers define a megabyte as 1000 X 1000 bytes, or 1,000,000. Microsoft defines a megabyte as 1024 X 1024, or 1,048,576. The 48,576 X 256 = 11,949,696. So, 256 - 12 = 242, which is close to what the Axim reports. I haven't had a card yet where the Axim reports what's printed on the card.

Never again

I got a SanDisk 256mb card with my Axim and lost my data about a half dozen times. I tried formatting it ten ways to sunday, with different options, etc. Nothing worked, and the card still had data loss on a daily basis.

I will never touch another SanDisk card again.

Hey, at least it wasn't me plugging SimpleTech this time Astounded!!! :D

Current (28/06/2003) info:

Panasonic 128,256,512mb works fine.
SimpleTech 128,256 works fine (no info about 512mb yet)

SimpleTech appear to have changed there supplier of SD cards - the code on the back of the card has changed format. I've emailed and asked them about it. SimpleTech are good at replying, and I've not seen a problem with them yet.

This ends the news, over to Astounded for the weather... :p
