This is true - go to anywhere that has watch or calculator batteries and get a CR-2032.

Thanks CTSLICK and ikehiker

Tiredness tricked me in to thinking they were rechargeable - and also the fact that the readings for my past backup battery had fluctuated from 50% to 100% after charging the main battery.

After reading other threads here about backup battery fluctuating readings, I understand this can be caused by dirty contacts, heat, but is most likely an Axim peculiarity.

The new backup battery I bought 6 days ago is now currently reading 90%.

Thus, when the EM-500 woke up at midnight (like all PPC's do) to reset the alarms it would not shut off due to the button being pressed down. I think the stock case for the Axim may have done the same thing to me...except I think it may be touching the screen or pressing the D-pad. Anyway, now I always keep my Axim out of the case overnight and have yet to wake up to a dead battery.
Makes me wonder if Dell knew about this, and that this is why the original Ax was shipped without having the center button activated (remember the patch?)

Even now, it's a control panel, and you have to explicitly turn on the center keypad.

Hmmmm...
