I have an Dell AXIM X5, and my PC detected it one time, but I disconnected it, and then, the PC does not detect it any more, I try soft rest, hard reset, plug it on other USB port, even I try on other PC, but either PC can detect it. (both PC has Windows XP Professional and ActiveSync 3.7.1).
Sounds like either the firewall is blocking Activsync, or you don't have the Dell USB drivers installed. Use the CDROM from Dell to install the Dell drivers.

What can I do to solve this?
thanks for your help.
Try removing the main battery from your Axim, and leave it out for a few minutes. Then, put the battery back in and try to synch again.

Did you find a resolution to this problem? I have run into exactly the same frustrated situation. I've had my Dell Axim X5 for over a year and it's been great. My USB cable has been working very well!! But all of a suddent, I just connected my USB cable and now it can't be recognized. It appears that my Dell Latitude is seeing the hardware, but the error message that pops up at the bottom right of the screen is "USB Device Not Recognized". When I click on the error message "USB Device Not Recognized", it says "UNKNOWN DEVICE", and that's also what I see under Device Manager. It says it's enabled but doesn't see drivers for it. So I downloaded the cd again (for Active Synch 3.7), and also downloaded a more recent version of 3.7.1 from the Internet. I've read several of these posts, that seem to conclude that it was a driver problem. So I also installed the original sw on another pc and it's giving me the same problems ("USB Device Not Recognized" when trying to connect; and "Unknown Device" appears under the USB section in Device Manager). Leads me to believe I have a bad cable or something's wrong with my Dell Axim. I would truly appreciate anybody's help with this. Needless to say, it's been very frustrating!! Thank you!!
I had the same problem. Last connection 07.09.04 and I really had no idea what was wrong. When I removed the USB device and connected it again, Win2000 detected "a new USB device" but ActiveSync "could not found any Pocket PC". It was nothing about the USB Connection, becaus I tried the other USB at my computer as well. I tried to uprade ActiveSync 3.7 to 3.7.1. and failed twice (the setup didn't work well). I was quite angry, but then (I still dont know why) it worked again like always...
The USB driver from Dell is required for XP also. The problem is that if you connect the Axim BEFORE installing the driver the default driver gets installed and it simply doesn't work with the Axim. Follow the directions in the user manual explicitly--install the Dell USB driver first, then cradle the Axim and it should connnect. The drivers are on the CDROM.
I haven't done the Windows update yet, but from reading it appears that it installs a default firewall that blocks a lot of communications. Activesync uses TCP/IP for communications, so the firewall sees it as an attempt to connect to the PC from an external user and blocks it. You have to configure the new firewall to allow that communication.
Thank you JAKERICH....I did as you recommended in terms of the drivers. I reboot my pc, insert the CDROM (Pocket PC 2003 Companion CD - incl MS Outlook 2002 and MS Active Synch 3.7) and just installed Active Synch. I have Outlook 2003, so I didn't want to install the MS Outlook 2002. It installed the sw (although yesterday I had installed 3.7.1 from the Internet), but since you suggested I stick with the CDROM, I did that. It installed it and then asked me to connect the synch cable to pc, then turn on the Axim, then plug the synch cable into the AXIM. It took about a minute and came back with the too familiar response (USB Device Not Recognized; which then I click on and it shows UNKNOWN DEVICE, and then clicking on that, it shows under the device status section...No drivers installed for this device). So I'm back to square one!! Now you mention something about a firewall and checking that out. Could you please give me further instructions on where I look for that, and what I need to do once I'm there? Thanks again for all your help!!
The drivers are on the CDROM, in the root directory. There is a file there that ends in ".inf" that is the installation file. You can, I think, double click on that file and it installs, or you can update the driver for the "Unknown Device" and then point to that .inf file when it asks for the installation location.
I don't have the update to Windows, so I can't help with the firewall, sorry.
I have never had this problem, and yet never bothered to install the driver, and update Windows XP Home faithfully. I have ZoneAlarm Security Suite, so the Windows Firewall is off. I hardly ever connect via USB, though; mostly IR.

I am also having this problem. It seems like it started about the same time Microsoft automatically downloaded SP2 to XP (I haven't installed it yet, however).
One thing I notice is that when I look at the device name in ActiveSync/File/Mobile Device, it has added a "1" in front of the device name. I tried renaming the device, but the same thing happened the next time I connected.
My device actually connects, starts looking for changes, and then drops the connection.

Check the firewall settings. THe latest SP2 has much tighter firewall parameters, and is probably blocking the connection from A/S because it sees it as an external internet device attempting to connect to your PC.
The first time I ran ActiveSync after "upgrading" to XP SP2, a popup window asked me if I wanted to allow ActiveSync access through the firewall (I believe there were options for permanent or one-time access). Since then I have had no problems.

If you installed Activesync from the CDROM when you first got the Axim and if you followed the directions it should have installed the driver automatically. You must have installed it at some time or you wouldn't be able to sync, even through IR. I think that to sync IR or WiFi you first must establish the partnership via USB. To establish the partnership requires the driver.
