Incorrect Memory Reporting

I just today got a new SanDisk 256meg SD card. But when I check my Ax memory settings, it only shows 22 megs available. Obviously I'm either overlooking something, or something is wrong. I remember somebody else mentioning this, but I can't find that thread. Anyone know what's going on?

Beware of SanDisk

Secondly, make sure you use the drop down box and select SD Card and not Built-in-Storage 22 sounds right for Built in Storage.

My MAIN memory is showing as 64mb. The Storage Card Memory (START / SETTINGS / SYSTEM / MEMORY / STORAGE CARD) is showing "Total storage card memory: 21.24 MB."

That's with a 256 meg card.

Something somewhere isn't right. Does this thing have to be formatted or something? Can't find any information on it anywhere.

ANOTHER INTERESTING THING...

What else is interesting is that the Dell shows the same "Storage card" reading regardless of whether the SD card is inserted or not.

Mine too!

Now look just below that. It should have a Drop Down Box. The first option is the "Built-in Storage" (Which is what is being reported) the second option is "SD Card". Switch to that.

Hey, mine just changed to 122.41

If it does not give you the option of "SD Card" then you have a bad SD Card

THAT did it. Now I'm showing 241.13 mb. THANKS!

(Boy, what stupid software. When something says STORAGE CARD MEMORY it should MEAN storage card memory!).

I just got my Dell in the mail today. I have a question along the same lines... Why does it report 22 megs for the Built-In Memory. I thought it was 64/48... where's the rest of my 48 megs going?

The rest is taken up by the Operating System. Of the 48 MB ROM, there is about 22 MB left over that you can store other apps on. Be careful not to store apps that update data frequently as there is only about 10,000 write cycles available to the ROM.

Anything placed on ROM will not be lost if you have to hard-reset, whereas anything stored in the 64 MB of RAM will be gone.

Chris...

The reason that Built-In storage (the ROM leftovers) shows as a Storage Card is that Micro$oft never intended anyone to make ROM available as storage so there is no provision in the operating system to report it. The only storage name options available to Dell were Main Storage and Program Storage in RAM, and any Storage Cards they might provide. So, Dell got creative and called Built-In storage a Storage Card and made it available to us. It's confusing, but at least they made it available. For a low-end machine, I was very pleasantly surprised at that.
