Horrible sound from headphone jack

A couple of months ago I bought a used X5 and have used it for various things. I have listened to .mp3's with headphones before and the sound was great. A couple of days ago I decided to hook it into my Aux in jack on my car stereo and it also sounded fine. Today I hooked it up to my car and the volume was terribly low and when I cranked everything up it sounded horrible. I downloaded GSP Player and the volume problem impvroved but the sound quality it still horrible. The sound is all staticy (sp?) and crackly. It sounds the same through headphones as well.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Steve

Okay, apparently nobody has a clue?! I'm going to have to assume that it's hardware and not software related.

Anybody have a clue how much it would cost to have this fixed? The unit is out of warranty.

Thanks,
Steve

I bought a used X5 off of Craigs List that had a bad headphone jack. Sound would crackle in and out of mono (mostly out). I opened up the X5 (using instructions on this site) with hopes that I could solder a new mini-jack onto it that I purchased from Radio Shack. The jack on the X5 was practically destroyed; the mostly plastic casing was crumbled and even looked melted in some parts, and some of the metal pieces used to conduct the audio current were loose and slipped easily off of the PCB. What's worse is that I had no hopes of soldering the Radio Shack one in its place, since the X5 jack is much smaller and contacts in different places.

Judging from the build quality of the jack, I would estimate that repeated insertion and removal of headphones, or any other mini-jack, would damage the jack rather quickly. However, I don't know the habits of my X5's previous owner well enough to judge.

Thanks for the info. It appears that my problem was software related afterall. I didn't know about the pre-amp setting for GSP player.

Do you happen to have the link that shows how to open the Axim up?

Thanks,
Steve

This one helped me most of all:

And here's the thread in which I talked about my problem:

Glad it wasn't a hardware issue for you!
