Solution for a crashed ROM

During a ROM upgrade my system crashed and so did my Axim X5.
Dell couldn’t help me because my Axim is more than a year old, but I found a solution to fix a crashed ROM.

First: You need a CF memory card (64MB or more) and the crashed Dell Axim X5 with charged battery.

1. Download a ROM upgrade from the Dell website (for instance: R63937.EXE System Utilities: Dell Axim X5 ROM Update for Pocket PC 2002, Pocket PC 2002, English, Axim X5, v.05200300EN, A02; Axim X5 ROM Update for Pocket PC 2002, Advanced (400-MHz) correct only ROM download.)

2. Unzip this file and copy the files P25_NK_H_04100300EN.IMG and P25_NK_L_04100300EN.IMG (or something that looks the same) to the CF memory card.

3. Remove both batteries from the Axim.

4. Put the CF memory card in the Axim.

5. Put the (large) battery back in the Axim without touching any buttons on the Axim.

6. Press and hold the next buttons:
a. contacts
b. Reset
c. Power
d. Scroll (next to recorder)

7. Release the Reset and Powerbutton at the same time (don’t release the contacts and scroll button)

8. Hold the contacts and scroll button for 20 seconds, until a diagnostic screen appears.

9. As soon as the diagnostic screen is started, the new ROM automatically installs from the CF memory card.

10. After 15 minutes the process is finished and the Axim is ready for use.

Question

Hi !

My first post...

I am trying the CF-method but is not successfull :rolling:
I get into the bootloader screen but get hung at the line :
"Determining Card Type..."

Previous lines are:
"CF card detected!"
"Init CF card ok!"

I am using a Memorex 64MB card.
What is the problem ?

Regards,
/Erland

Hi again !

The problem is solved ! :)

When I used a 128MB SanDisk card instead of the Memorex card, everything worked smoothy. :approve:

Hello altogehter

I tried to reset the AXIM as described above. No Success.. Sorry, 1 tried with CF Scan Disk 1.0 GB with the update in English... R59756.

I pressed the buttons as described. My question: All buttons together or behind each other?
I further habe no idear, what could be the problem anymore.

Who can help me?

This is still the fix for X5, not X50. The instructions for X50 are stickied here. Be aware that you do this at your own risk.
