Hard-Reset @ Turn-On?!

Hi there, I did a search and found a couple posts, but none had any answers, so i'm going to ask again.. and please someone respond it only takes a minute and saves someone else so much hassle..

When I turn on my Axim X5, if I haven't had it turned on in a day or two, it will have either already performed a hard reset, or prompt me to delete all data, or remain frozen on the dell logo.. Does anyone know if there is a driver or patch or something I can get to fix this?

Thank you
Robin :hide:

Do you know what your battery status is when this happens? Is your battery dead?

Hmmm... not good. Does this happen only after you load some software, or will it spontaneously happen even with the system completely clean? Also, does your main battery actually hold a charge? Turn it on (if you can) and look at the battery monitor app to see if the charge holds.

If the battery's good and it's happening on a clean system I see one of two things. Something physical inside is perhaps interupting the power supply so that RAM get's wiped. That or perhaps your ROM image (the actual OS) is somehow corrupted.

If it's a corrupted ROM you should be able to download the latest ROM installer from Dell Support and reflash the OS, which should correct it.

I have this same problem and have since new. Battery is new and charged 100%. Mine never does a hard reset without prompt. If I cancel the reset operation only the date, time and some settings are lost, all other data remains largely intact. My X5 was supplied as part of a Sat Nav system from an independent supplier so Dell don't really want to know. I am sending it back this morning but quality of service in the UK being what it is, I'm not hopeful of a satisfactory solution.

I should have joined this forum before buying because I now realise my brand new X5 300 besides being faulty is also years out of date. You live and learn.

Regards

John

Any chance that the reset button on the side is sticking?

I've tried doing a hard reset using the reset button and there's a definite click when it’s pressed, so it doesn’t appear to be stuck.

I'm having a similar problem except that my x5 is spontaneously powering up without me hitting the power button. When it does, it tries to do a hard reset. It ends up killing the main battery because it stops at the "dump data" prompt and won't go off. I've lost numerous backup batteries to this. I've resorted to keeping it plugged into AC all the time until I can figure out the problem. Any ideas? I'm just about ready to dump the whole thing and go to Palm.

One procedure that has many folks when even hard-resets don't cure problems is to remove the main & backup batteries for 10 - 20 minutes.

This does a full power-down hard reset and has been known to clear some wierd problems.
