Stupid me -- I installed XP SP2 (and that wasn't the problem)
Against my better judgement, after I formatted the HD and reloaded XP Pro, I decided to install SP2. I'm guessing that's my problem.
Axim X5, 300 MHz
Connecting through the cradle to a USB port on the mobo
Active Sync 3.7.1
XP Pro, SP2
When I put the X5 in the cradle, it connects, then disconnects, then connects, then disconnects, then connects, then disconnects .... you get the idea. Eventually it stops. When I look in the device manager, under the USB section is shows "Dell Axim USB Sync". When I click "properties" the error message shown is "The device can not start."
I've uninstalled/reinstalled ActiveSync (including deleting the folder and rebooting in between). I've tried my wife's X5 in my cradle, and same results. I've made a firewall rule exception for Active Sync (both EXEs). I've turned off the firewall. I've turned off Norton AV. I've tried both USB ports on the mobo, and the 3rd USB that plugs into the USB2 jack on the mobo. Nothing works.
I can plug my X5 into my wife's computer (XP SP1) with no problems.
I really don't want to have to format/reload again. I just finished getting everything reloaded. ActiveSync was the last thing to do.
Who can help me? I tried calling Dell, but after 75 frikkin' minutes on hold, I hung up.
I just tried to roll back to the system restore before SP2. No surprise, it said that it couldn't. If I can't find a solution by Wednesday, I'm going to have to decide if I want to keep SP2 on this machine and sync with the laptop instead, or if I want to format/reload again, and *not* install SP2. I had no troubles until tonight. Thanks a lot MicroShaft! Let's make your own sync program not work with your own OS, and let's not give anyone any choices for other programs to use.

Try checking the firewall settings.
Also check the driver settings. The x50v cradle gave me a warning that the driver were not "windows" compliant. If you have it set to not prompt you it may have not installed it properly.
I've tried that. I made exception rules for both the ActiveSync EXE files .. didn't help. I turned off the firewall and rebooted ... didn't help.
I read on a Compaq site that one guy fixed it by formatting, loading XP, loading ActiveSync, and **THEN** doing the SP2 upgrade. AS had to be installed before SP2.
I really don't care about syncing with Outlook or anything, but I need AS to be able to install progs and x-fer data.
Have you checked the USB drivers, I am not sure if you need to have you Axim connected or not, but the drivers might indicate a problem. If there appears nothing obvious, try removing the USB drivers for your Axim, and then uninstall activesync, reboot, and then reinstall your USB drivers for the Axim then ActiveSync per the owners manual.
At work on my Win2000 Pro PC, in the Control Panel -> System Porperties on the Hardware tab, selecting Device Manager, I see a few USB ports, but when I plug my Axim in I get a new element added -Windows CE USB Devices and under that is >Dell Axim USB Sync.
From here you can right click on the Axim and look at the properties, you would probably be in luck if that showed a problem, you might get some help from the trouble shooter, or you can delete the Dell Axim here.
-This might be a little different on XP, but should be essentially the same.
I think Uzziah0 has hit on the problem you are seeing. I'm also using XP Home SP2 just fine with an X5 both through the cradle and wifi, so it should work once the drivers and settings are configured properly.
You can unistall SP2, by going to Add/Remove Programs. Takes about 15-20 minutes. I had to remove SP2 due problems with McAfee. I have had no problems syncing with either SP1 or SP2. It was Dell that had me remove the SP2 and advised not to re-install until Microsoft comes up with some more fixes to their problems with SP2. I know that this may not help, but give it a try.
On a whim, I swapped cradles with my wife. At least it gets further than it did before. Now it connects, but then drops.
Grrrr .... unhooked and tried it again, and it started doing the same frikkin' thing. Connect/disconnect/connect/disconnet
I've uninstalled SP2, uninstalled / reinstalled Active Sync, it just won't work!
The new error message that pops up on the Axim screen is:
Connection has been dropped. Try reconnecting your device. If the problem persists check your serial cable and any user name, password, or domain that you are providing.
See ActiveSync Troubleshooter in Microsoft Active Sync Help for further information.
I've looked everywhere ... can't find either of my original CD's from Dell.
The USB driver for X5 is R55367.exe from Dell downloads (ftp://ftp.dell.com/Handheld/). If the PC is attempting to use the WinXP mobile device drivers, you'll need to remove them (while the Axim is plugged in, go to Control panel, System, Hardware (tab), Device manager) before installing these.

I quit. Screw it. I'll just connect the damn thing to the frikkin' laptop. I've already spent 2 frikkin' days doing nothing but trying to get this POS to work. It's a lot of trouble for a GPS / memo jotter.
I can't figure it out. I've plugged in USB Mice and USB Card Readers just to make sure there's nothing wrong with the USB ports.
Everything works except the frikkin' Dell Axim. I've tried 2 different one. Hard reset, no CF card ... just like it came out of the box.

That's not a guarantee. Activesync demands more of the USB port than mice and card readers. The TCP/IP protocol that activesync uses is finicky. You might try moving from one USB port to another to see if you can find a more robust one. If you are using a hub, try without, and if you are not using one, try one. Try the front USB ports and the rear ones, if you have both. Basically, Activesync stresses USB and is fragile to boot, so the combo leads to weird problems.
