Well, I've gone through 2 refurbs in my year of warranty ownership of my Axim X5, and now that I'm out of warranty, my current incarnation has "died." It powers up and all that but the touch screen doesn't work. I've tried hard resetting it and recalibrating. No dice. I'm forced to realize that this is a hardware problem. I've replaced it with an X30H, but I hate to have a brick sitting in my house that I once paid $300 for. Any suggestions as to how to handle this?

Just thought, do you have a screen protector on the device. If yes remove and try the touchscreen again.

There are alot of threads on this subject try searching for mylar screen problems or touch screen problems..Usually you just have to loosen some screws or tap a wire on the inside to fix this problem

I found this a while ago whilst searching around and saved it. I hope I don't need it but saved it anyway.
Thumbs up to whoever posted it originally :)

I had this problem for about 6 months. I was able to work around it by pressing in on the sides. The problem progressively got worse, so I decided to open it up and see what was going on. This is what I found:
The touch screen lays on top of the display screen. At the bottom of the touch screen, directly below the "Inbox Button", there is a flex cable (flat Mylar with conductors). I found that the contacts from the button had scratch through the Mylar on the flex cable and would short out. I suppose this would scramble the decoding from the touch screen.
To correct the problem, I cut a small piece of electrical tape and laid it across the damaged area on the flex cable. I reassembled it using just the screws (I left the rubber sides and feet off) and tested it. After I was sure it was working correctly, I finished assembling it.
You can find detailed disassembly instructions on the web by doing a search for X5 screen replacements. The procedure isn't that difficult, just be careful when you remove the rubber sides and feet to lift them slowly and try to keep the glue stuck to the rubber (this makes reassembly much easier).
Quick instruction:
1. Do a complete backup of your unit (you will loose all your data).
2. Remove both batteries and any cards.
3. Remove the rubber feet, sides and plugs at the bottom back.
4. Remove 6 screws from the back.
5. You should be able to remove the back of the unit.
6. Unplug the speaker cable (pull straight up on the plug).
7. Lift the motherboard and screen away from the front cover.
8. Make your repair.
9. Reassemble in reverse order.
if none of this works take a bensus card and swipe it under the edges of the screen

I need a new screen for my DELL X5, I would like to buy one(or the unit)for around 100, i really need this, pls PM ME
Hey, I wanted to thank you... I tried this just because I was fed up with the business card mumbo jumbo (Dell Tech Support) and I am out of warranty.
Upon opening up, at first I didn't notice the wear mark on the flat cable... but upon closer review bingo, there it was! I used clear packing tape over the wear mark and Wah La!! IT WORKED!
After a few frustrating months I found your solution to the touch screen not working and made the same repair to the ribbon cable. It was easy to do and it worked! Thanks for posting this information.
This seems to be one of the biggest problems of the X5.

My X5 screen got cracked thru my fault. I had PocketPCTechs replace the screen. Very good job, very fast, has worked perfectly ever since.
