Main versus Buildin Storage
When installing a new program you are given a choice of storing the application in the buildin, main or SD/CF memory. I know what the SD or CF memory are, but I don't understand the difference between the main and build in storage. The device only comes with ROM and RAM memory build in. Unless the pocket PC is different than a desktop, everything is deleted from the RAM when the device is turned off. This leaves the internal ROM memory. Is the ROM memory split between main and buildin, and if so what is the difference. When looking at the available memory, it is also slit between main and buildin. However, I can't get the totals to add up to the amount of memory I think I have. Can anyone explain this?

I'll try to do this simple.
You main memory is your RAM. Basically, your Flash ROM is taken by part of the PPC 2002 OS. It is encoded (about 27MB worth of OS) where you will not see that part of ROM. the rest of the Flash ROM is a perk Dell has encoded where we can use it as built-in storage (about 21MB for the X5 advance model and about 5MB for the X5 Basic model). Your System Information (under Start -->Settings --> System Information tab or in your Axim Explorer, My Documents --> SysInfo --> SysInfo text file on the FLASH: line) will show your FlashROM.

Thanks. So far I understand. Then a hard reset is basically a reformatting of the available user portion of the internal flash ROM? Are there any utilities that can fix problems on the ROM without resorting to a hard restart?
Also, should you ever install/store an application in the main memory (RAM). It appears from the memory allotment that programs can be installed on the RAM memory. Won't they be deleted when the device is turned off or on a soft reset? If this is the case, why is that option available when installing programs?

The FlashRom won't be affected with the Hard reset. only the RAM. The Hard reset will wipe the Main Memory(RAM) clean and start with a clean slate for the exception of the ROM. install a file in the ROM and it will stay in there.
During soft resets, Installed programs or any file won't be affected so much. but it is always good to back up your Axim. ![]()
