Hi Chaps ( & chappesses)

My main bug bear at the moment is that I have been trying to get my 8210 working with a program called Mphone pro 2.6. (evaluation version, my shareware period is not yet up)

This appears to be a really good piece of software that enables you to synch phone entries, compose ringtones, generate SMS messages & Logos.

I have tried this application with my 8210 and it will not connect, however I have tried it with someones 8310 and it works fine, also with a siemens s55.

Do you think this could be an issue with the software?

Does anyone know what rom upgrades do, ie a02. a03 exactly?

I have tried using my axim with the Psion ir travel modem (you can know get these less than £30.00 in the UK and it works fine.

Someone on the Dell Axim forum posted about a program called peacemakerpro for pocket pc's which allows the ir port to talk to a large amount of different platforms, I havn't tried this, does anyone have any experience with this?

Regards

Mark C

From my personal experience with Peacemaker... It didn't seem to make a difference. The updated IR driver (with A00) ROM seemed to make the IR a little better and then the ROM update (either A02 or A03) seemed to help it a lot. I'm not sure if anything but the IR driver update made any difference.

I know this isn't much help (if any), but it is all I have.

Hi agaiin

I have just tried the various combinations with a 8210 and my data enabled sim I have also attempted connection via gprs and non gprs sims (obviously the 8210 is not gprs compat) with sadly no success on any type of reaction with handset
I have connected same handset ok with jornada 720
- as anybody tried contacting nokia ?- it would have initially thought that it may be due to a the handset software change - but the previous two posts suggests that the generic ir driver in axim is not compatible with earlier nokia drivers.

one small thing I noticed was the axim connects...sends the file and in doing so the nokia IR beam icon stops flashing...like it is recieving data. The axim says the file has sent..and the nokia icon starts flashing again...but no data seems to be transfered. Not sure if this helps, but sreems stratnge that everything appears to work except no data transfers.

I have been using my Axim IR to sync with my laptop at work (haven't gotten an extra cable yet, and might not).

I updated the Rom to A03 last night and it seems like the IR is steadier (but I just did it last night, so I haven't done much connecting).

Here are my observations on the use of IR and the Axim:
* The Axim is continually sending a little IR signal out - if you turn the Axim on and set it near something that is ready to receive, the Axim is recognized (I do this to connect to my laptop).
* Once connected to something if you are sending or receiving from the Axim you might need a better connection (signal strength) to actually transfer data, the initial connection sends very little data, but file transfers are larger, and you might need to move your Axim around a little. Sometimes I am connected but can't transfer files and move the Axim around and it starts the transfer. Also, IR bounces - with all the plastic and metal the signal could be bouncing all over the place and you could be having interference with yourself (although I don't really think this is likely, I do try to keep my Axim and laptop from tight confined places). This could also manifest itself if your Axim is too close to the other device.
I have found the best distance for the two devices to be about 4 inches, and not straight in line with each other, about 30 degrees off of straight on.
* Then, there is the sync. This seems to be the most sensitive (which doesn't make sense; I have transfered files, moved nothing and been unable to sync). Again, moving the Axim around helps. Sometimes nothing helps to get the sync to work, so I reboot the laptop, soft reset the Axim, and then I am just able to sync.

I don't really know too much about the IR receiver of the Axim, and how far into the device it is set - these effect the angle the Axim and other device need to be, and can have an effect of the range. The IR on the Axim is much more sensitive than the Palm I used to have, and how sensitive the device you are connecting to will also have an effect.

I thing the best you can do is reset everything, and play around with placement.

PS: I am a software engineer, and I have written software that receives and interprets the IR signal for cable and satelite TV boxes, so I have a little knowledge (not as much as the hardware engineers I worked with, but some).

I had the same problem. I received the msg "Unable to establish connection.." something about being still connected to the cradle. I ran through a few things.
I actually tried upgrading the IR with the patch, but unfortunately this did not fix the problem. Then I tried to restore from backup (which was a 7 day old backup), that didn't fix it.
I endevoured to uninstall the IR keyboard software, and airscan antivirus that I had. I think these were just red herrings. (soft reset - didn't fix it)
I then went to START>SETTINGS>SYSTEM>MEMORY>RUNNING PROGRAMS and chose STOP ALL. Then my IR started to work again.
Unsure what may have caused this problem, I did about 10 soft resets between all the steps to no avail. Maybe it could have been some software conflict? Or maybe the cradle connection is sensitive.

It happened again, and my Axim wasn't in the cradle. Soft reset it 5 times then I uninstalled the IR keyboard software and it fixed it straight away after a soft reset.
I believe the IR keyboard software is conflicting with the IR port, or it's constantly assuming the keyboard is attached.

I also have the same problem! I am trying to use IrDA to connect between my new Axim X5 and my Nokia 6100 GPRS enabled mobile. Nokia tech support have been very helpful, and have downloadable info for most phones, but they don't support PPC 2003 yet!

I can get the connection, but cannot access any web site or send/receive email, despite hours on the phone to Nokia and O2.

Unfortunately, I cannot get any assistance from Dell.

Would go for a Socket card, but they don't make one for Nokia 6100. Would go for a direct cable connection, but no one makes one for X5 to Nokia 6100.

Can someone offer a solution? If not, my Dell Axim X5 gets returned as unfit for purpose.
