Infrared is DEAD!!!!!! Yikes!!!

Hi Guys,

I have my Axim for a few weeks now and never had any troubles.
Infrared was working fine and I use it everyday to connect to my cell phone and use e-mail/internet.

Just now, all of a sudden, I can't connect to my phone anymore, the ports are well alligned, tried several distances between the phone and the Axim, turned off and on my phone several times and did several soft resets on my Axim.

When I trie to connect, or just when I click on the Infrared icon, I get the following error msg "Unable to establish an infrared connection while mobile is connected to the desktop".

It is not connected to anything, I just have it loose in my hand or it lies on my desk next to my phone.

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If the Axim were a woman, I would marry her!!!

I'm interested in hearing answers to this as well, using the IR I was able to connect to a friends Palm, but not his Nokia phone.
As I'm about to get a new phone with IR and GPRS I really want to know of any issues some of you guys might've had...would a cable connect be better?

Nokia phone connection by ir

Hi,

Have read your post with interest, I have a Nokia 8210 and have used this quite successfully with my Psion Revo to synch contacts and browse the net.

Trying to do the same with my Axim isn;t possible, however using a Nokia 8310 is fine, a siemens s55 is fine but not my nokia..

I have spoken to the Dell customer support (got through straight away) they recommended upgrading the Rom to A03.

When I asked will this solve the problem, the reply came "i'm not sure but its worth giving it a go"

When I mentioned that there appeared to be a lot of Dell customers experiencing the same problems as me the reply came back "I am not aware of any IR problems with the Axim"

I havn't tried this yet, I have tried the IR patch from Dell and this makes no difference whatsoever.

I heard somewhere that ir can be influence by certain types of lighting (artificial, strip lights for example) so i've tried to connect in various locations, again to no success.

Why does the IR port not work with certain nokia phones but does with others?

Do you need to have discoverable beaming on or off?

Do you need to have activesynch on or off?

I have tried to connect the two devices within a 4" to 8" range still no joy.

My axim connects and prints quite happily to my ir hp printer using Hp's freeware utility (hurrah for HP!!!!!!) (why didn't Microsoft/Dell bundle this with the Axim???)

Is my Axim faulty?

Am I asking too much of this piece of technology?

Am I insane (yep)

Any help would be greatly appreciated, being able to use my 8210 and my Axim was one of the main reasons I bought it...

Ho hum

Regards

Mark

Hmm

I am having the same troubles as mentioned in these posts. My old Palm OS works fantastic with any IR comm. But, my Axim does not seem to transmit the info. It usually connects and finds the other device...it even says it sent the file, but it does not send the information. Seems to work fine with other CE devices. However, non CE devices have either very slow comm or not data is exchanged.

Has anyone used the dell patch with success??

My axim works fine with 6310i via gprs - Have you checked your service providers web site for pocketpc connection instructions - I know vodafone site - particularly gprs setup instructions is very good.

Nokia connection

I ahve actually tried with the 6310...my boss has one...it did not work. What impact does gprs have? Shouldn't it work with just the ir ports aligned? His old palm os works very well...and quick...

I am confused...

HI

I would not think the gprs should have any impact on the IR connection - It does have a definate effect on connection speed - standard uk networks only use (except orange) use max 19600 baud for connection - if your connection speed is set higher you may have problems connecting - Is your bosses sim data enabled? and the IR activated on handset menu?

HI

I have upgraded to a03 - but the major change to ao2 is primarily PIM enhancements not connection upgrades .Although nokia are famous for software variation I do know there is a considerable difference in software between 6310 and 6310i - I have usually found device setup is usually the cause - the phone handset has not been correctly data enabled wrong number etc - do you get any response from phone handset - attempts to dial etc - if I have the time I will try my current sim in 8210 and try connection through standard network - can you try to set up axim with a dial up setting and see if handset attempts connection this will at least prove IR connection \ compatiblity.

If I get a chance...but it is someone else's phone. Better yet...I have the same problem on my 3360. The dell says it sends the file but the phone never recieves it. Same as the 6310. It works well with my Handspring...no configurations necessary.

Thanks for your help...and let me know your thoughts.
