Axim turning itself on...
Anyone had their Axim turn on by itself? Every few hours(but not on a regular basis), it just turns on and sits there doing nothing. I don't even touch it when it does this, and it's not on the cradle either.
Anyone with a similiar experience? Would any software I have installed be capable of turning it on?

There are actually a number of programs capable of turing on the Axim and the default for some of these is to be 'on.' Here are the ones I can think of:
Alarms: Use Settings/System/Clock/Alarms and uncheck any that are set.
Calendar reminders (appointments or tasks): For any item you've entered (and this could even be holiday reminders that are synced from Outlook), open the item, tap Edit, and tap 'Remind me.' Change the setting to 'None.'
Inbox (email): Tools/Options, tap on a service, next/next/next/options, uncheck 'check for mail.' Repeat for each service.
Once you've set all these, you can also change the power settings to be sure it will turn off the Ax if you've forgotten one:
Settings/System/Power/Control, check box under "On battery power" and set to a fairly short time period. I've also disabled the ability of the program and record buttons to 'Turn on device...' since the case from Dell applies enough pressure to these buttons to turn it on. Now only the lit button at the top will turn on mine and it is slightly recessed. Of course, I've also stopped using the case since I now have much better things to carry it around in.
Obviously some of these features are the reason I have a PDA so disabling them kind of defeats the purpose but at least it's good to know about them if you are going to leave your Ax unattended for any length of time. I've also taken to leaving mine plugged in to the power adapter overnight so that if it does turn on, at least the battery won't drain before I notice.
Other readers: Feel free to point out anything I've missed. I suspect there are similar features in some second party aps that I may not have installed.
Also, I have a question - does anyone know of a way to completely turn off the Ax (short of removing both batteries which is equivalent to a hard reset)?

You might also want to check your ActiveSync settings on the Axim- make sure the unit does not try to sync when not connected (activesync>tools>schedule...disable the 'when not connected' option). This seems to have been then cause for many by reading prior posts.
If all else fails....I did have the same problem with my original Axim, I had double-checked and triple-checked all the setting suggestions listed by ikehiker & others, yet it persisted. I went through hard resets and the like, but nothing seemed to help. Finally, I go tin touch with Dell, they seemed to think it was a hardware related problem, as this problem was not unheard of by Dell. They replaced my unit, and voila, never had the problem again!
Ikehiker:
For me, and somebody correct me if I'm wrong, an 'OFF' with the Axim would be to ensure that no programs are left running. Remember that closing a program window does not unload the program from memory...it is 'minimized' in sorts. You can use the switcher bar applet (found in settings>system), and exit the programs this way- this clears them from memory. There are also several other apps available that will give the 'X' in the program window more of a true 'close' function. Other than this, turning it off as in no power would be the equivalent of a hard reset.

Thanks for the headsup about the hardware problem. I was not aware of that (and I thought I'd read ALL the posts on this forum. )
However, unless there is something I'm missing, the normal operation of the Axim is for the reminders set in the Calendar to come up even if all programs are turned off. At least Wisbar (and the Switcher Bar, which I used before Wisbar) shows no programs running and I still get the alarms for various reminders. In most cases, that's good but if there is a way to turn this off without chnaging the setting on each individual task/appointment, I'd like to hear about it so I can do it before leaving on vacations

I see what you mean now. Have you tried to turn it off via sounds & notifications in the settings menu? If you scroll down to the reminders setting, then disable sound & message & flash light checkboxes, perhaps this would be easier than turning off notification on each calender entry? Just an idea....

Thanks, ac!
I did an experiment: Settings/Sounds & Notifications and clicked off the check box for Programs. The Axim stayed off past the test appointment time. Now I wonder if I'll remember to turn it back on after a trip? :rolling:
