Serial cable weirdness

Just got the Axim travel serial cable and am trying to hook it up to an electronic circuit using RX, TX and GND.

I tested it by connecting to a PC running a terminal - worked fine.

Tested the electronics in the same way - worked fine.

Connected the electroinics to the Axim and nothing is received on the PDA.

Any ideas ?

Thanks.......

Do you need a null modem to swap Rx and Tx? If both connected to the PC, then you have connected them directly you have Rx to Rx and Tx to Tx.

Yes, that was it !- it's working perfectly now

I was looking for something more complicated as I'd heard the USB - serial chip in the lead needed DTR to be held momentary high so that a transmit could take place - which now turns out to be totally untrue.

Many thanks......

I've been trying all day to get my Axim to talk to my data logger. I've tried null modem, straight through and everything else I can think of. All I get is a blank stare. What are you using for software? Are you using a comm program to talk to your equipment or just the Axim terminal program?

Make sure Activesync is not running. Then start the software on the Axim and capture the COM port with it. Now connect the cable from the equipment.

If you connect the cable first, and if data arrives at the COM port, Activesync will start and capture the port, trying to sync.

Nope, same result, but it must be something along those lines. I turned off everything in ActiveSync, opened my comm program first but that didn't work. But, when I turn ActiveSync back on it won't synchronize with the PC. I get an error message that says that the port is not available. Have to do a soft reset to get it to sync.

Something is locking up the port. If it makes any difference, I'm using vxHpc to try to talk to the logger. I had this working on my Compaq Aero, but I know I had similar problems when I first tried that machine too.

Hmm.....how wrong was I

It's now receiving but only transmiting intermittently - it seems to be something to do with the order I power-up my Axim / circuit - very strange !.

However, I think I have found the solution (next to last post) :-

No, I just wrote a simple custom program just to send / receive bytes
