Replace Axim screen for $55

Interesting post on PocketPCThoughts today. They have a segment on replacement parts for Dell and other PDA's. They show a replacement Axim screen (complete) for $55.00. You can also access a screen which has complete details for replacing the screen yourself although the disclaimer says this is only for authorized repair facilities.

I have no problem with my Axim now but it is nice to know that I would have a shot at replacing the screen if needed without paying close to the cost of a new unit.

Here is some of the story:

SITES & RESOURCESGetHighTechInc. - PDA Parts and Accessories
Posted by Jason Dunn @ 10:00 PM

"GetHighTech, Inc. has just released a screen repair for the Dell Axim and iPAQ units. They have also included detailed online instructions for the DIY (Do It Yourself) person that would like to save money and fix the unit themselves. They claim that even non-technical people can perform most repairs on their PDA units. GetHighTech carries many hard to find parts for iPAQ, Jornada, Axim, and more."

That just takes me to the front page and I can't find the story. I'm sorry I'm a complete idiot. Is the story on the front page?

Here's the forum tdbunker was talking about.

It's reffering to GetHighTech Dell Axim X5 Digitizer/Glassto.

If their customers don't know what "DIY" means, I don't think they should be opening their PDA's, let alone manhandling hardware. For someone with a brain and an irreperably scratched screen, that's a great link! Thanks!

axim screen rplcmnt

I just installed new screen from gethightech and broke ribbon cbl connector. They are veryfragile and till you know their locking mechanism/methodology, easy to break. I broke first one and did last two fine. But there is no recovery from loss of this connector. I'll talk to Dell, but expect little compassion.

DIY or DIDon't?

Interesting post... I am a habitual DIYer... even if it risks the safety of my precious electronic brain. I wish I had seen this post earlier though... Great take-apart instructions.

I Spilled water on my unit yesterday and was forced to try and quickly recover the electronics... From my past Palm-related News group involvment I knew I had a good chance of saving it with a dryer if I acted quickly. I struggled for a while looking for a 7th screw until I realized that the glue behind the rubber was what was preventing my from opening the case.

Dryed it out, reinstalled everything and now I'm good to go.... for now.

Worried $55 isn't the screen

The $55 charge is for the digitizer not the screen. The digitizer is the top glasslike screen that you write and tap on. The screen in beneath the digitizer. If you aren't sure which you need, do as I did and take your Axim apart using the directions from the gethightech website. I should have done this first as I now recommend you do.

LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE.

I am now stuck with a digitizer. Just email me if you need one maybe we can work out a deal. The S.O.B.'s at GetHighTech will not accept a return of this item and will nick you for a 25% restocking charge on all returns. Dell is the one that refered me to them and based on my experience, I don't think they shouldn't recommend them. I am just as upset with Dell over the lack of service on an great handheld that bears their name.

Screen replacement

Try this link, thanks to desiv and Raynne413.

http://www.pocketpctechs.com/delx5rep.asp

It looks like it will cost you $149.00 U.S. plus shipping. They do the work. Something Dell support has failed to provide.
