Backup and Restore ARGHHHH!

Hi there,
First thr bad/good news - had a fault with my Axim, bad got the replacement today - new C1 processor, good. I backed up the Axim using activsync yesterday but it will not restore to the new Axim because it is a different mobile device. I have made sure that all of the settings on the new one are the same as those on the old but it doesn't seem to like the new processor. I had a similar problem when I upgraded from an Ipaq 3600 to a 3800 but Compaq released a patch which would allow a restore to a different processor. Unfortunately it will only work with Ipaqs. PLEASE has anybody any way around this problem ? There must be a lot of users in the same position. I've been on to Tech Support (in India) all he could suggest was to save the 'stg' file somewhere else, uninstall activesync then reinstall it. Obviously it didn't work. So please HELP:crooked: :rolling:

Try this, Take the back-up file and move it someplace else...Re-install active synch and give your device a different name. Then copy the original back-up into the directory of the newly named. Then try to do a restore.

I had to do something similiar, I had a total crash on my axim and it wouldn't let me use the same name because it said it already existed. So I did the above and it worked (of course now I realize the Win XP hides the active synch folder and now that I found it I won't have to go through this)

Mad Restore still ARGHHH!

Thanks for the try FEichinger, but still no go. I can probably get most of my stuff back on manually but I've used up all of my Microsoft Reader activations ( and begged extras ) so I was hoping to at least get the 'Reader' activations restored.

Try This

I found this on the Dell Forum and thought it may help.

Make a backup of your existing Axim using ActiveSync on the desktop. It's slow but reliable. Backups created by Dell's Data Backup utility have failed to restore as reported by a number of people in this forum.

Remove your old Axim from the cradle and put the new one in.
When the Partnership Wizard prompts you to create a new partnership, click Cancel. You will now be connected via a Guest Partnership.

Use ActiveSync to restore.
When the restore completes, you should get prompted to remove your Ax from the cradle and soft reset. When you put it back in the cradle, your Ax should be recognized under the existing partnership.

Do not connect your old Axim for syncing after a successful restore to your new one.

Exclamation Activesync Reatore

Thanx Mindhack but the problem is that Activesync thinks that the new Axim (new C1 Processor) is a different mobile device and won't restore to it. I've tried un-installing all references to activesync after saving the 'backup.stg' in a different directory, making a brand new partnership wit the new Axim ( the courier took the old one when he delivered the replacement ). It's the same problem I has with an Ipaq upgrade from 3600 to 3800 - the processor changed and it wouldn't restore a backup. Compaq however issued a patch which effectively converted the 'stg' file to work with the new processor and all was well. The patch was made specifically for Ipaqs so won't work. If Compaq can do it I'm sure Dell could - I'm just not sure how quickly the might get round to it. I know from various boards that there are a lot of 'B2' people getting 'C1' replacements so I'm sure that this might become a MAJOR problem. Anyway Tech Support say they will get back to me about this. If they do I'll post any info. :rolling:

Restoring problem

I am having a similar problem. I just did a backup (from my computer thru activesync) and then proceeded to install A04. after the installation, I tried restoring the backup and it said that restore cannot be completed successfully because it was created from a different type of mobile device.
I have no idea how to fix this. when activesync recognized the axim, I did not say "guest" partnership...
Does anybody have any ideas?

If you have done a backup with activesync you should be able to restore it. First off, make a copy of your AS backup file on your desktop to a separate folder. Next, delete your partnership in AS if you have one out there. Then put your PPC back in the cradle. When AS tries to create a new Partnership select connect as Guest. Your PPC should now connect to your computer as guest. Now go and try to restore your AS backup by going to Tools -> Backup/Restore. Goto the Restore tab and use the browse feature to find the backup that you want and then restore.

See if that works for you.

I have tried that with outluck. I think my problem is that my old Axim is 2003 and the replacement is 2002. I think once I upgrade the new Axim to 2003 you above process will work.

Thanks
Kelly

Dear Bill Gates;

Before I will ever “upgrade” to XP from WIN98SE, I will teach myself to write my own 98SE Programs, to the last, I will grapple with thee, from hell's heart, I will stab at thee, for hate's sake, I will spit my last breath at thee.

I would rather chase my own tail 'round the moons of Nibia and 'round the Antares Maelstrom and even 'round perdition's flames before I will EVER, of my own free will, “upgrade” to XP!!!
