Several things to watch for:
1. Make sure the backup battery is pressing firmly on the little fingers at the bottom of the pocket. Some folks have gently lifted those fingers higher to get better contact, others have used a small foam pad between the top of the battery and the cover to press the battery firmly into the pocket. Clean the backup battery carefully to get all fingerprints off when installing.
2. Do not remove the batttery when the alarm light is flashing. It will hard reset if you do.
3. Connect the external power supply when swapping batteries. That will provide power just in case the backup battery fails for any reason.
4. Leave the Ax in the cradle or on the charger all night. No harm is done by keeping the battery connected. In fact, the Axim batteries don't take deep discharges well, they shorten its life significantly. Try to charge the main battery to stay above 80% if possible. LI ION batteries don't develop the memory problems of Nickel batteries.
5. The backup battery at 80% is not a problem. The next time you look it may well be back at 100%. The sensing circuit is very sensitive to very small voltage changes that can be caused just by temperature changes, so the backup battery percentage will go up and down in the 70-100% range. If that bugs you, you can get a new one for about $3 at RadioShack that eliminates the problem.
