Worried Scroll wheel

Heard a lot of complaints about the scroll dial on Axim. Ppl say it works fine only for scrolling purposes. Pushing it in gives a feeling that it will break the thing. How many people are actually using scroll dial at full (meaning with the "push" function)? Has anyone broken their unit by doing that?

I've had a long experience with Sony PalmOS PDAs. Their jog dial is perfect. Wish Sony turn to the PPC market soon.

yeah its one of the lesser liked jog wheels out there in terms of feel, however it always worked for me, I hardly ever need to push it in either, but when I do it does feel strange, but works...

So what ur saying is that the dial on the unit is not like the dial on the sony unit? That's a shame....I really like the dial on the sony handheld.....

(As you can tell I dont have an Axim just yet....just gathering info first)

I would say it's totally different from the Sony Jog dial. The scroll wheel on Ax is more like a lever, not a dial.

The question remains. Has any broken their units (wheel) by pushing them, i.e. using it as "enter"?

It's not going to break. I really don't know why people think it's so stiff to push in. It just has a nice solid click.
The way it feels to me, some might object to the fact that the tab is a little pointy, so it pushes into your thumb a bit when trying to use it.
I use it all the time to adjust brightness ... push in and tap d-pad up/down.

I don't mean to sound ignorant, but I pushed in the lever thinking it sjould work and it sounded and acted like it wasn't supposed to used that way, so I haven't pushed it in since. Thanks for letting me know it really is meant to be pushed in. I honestly thought I broke something!

Mike C,

The pointyness of the lever becomes most apparent if you have the aluminum case. The extra recess of the opening for that lever makes it a bit more uncomfortable to push it in.

Other than that, it is fine

I imagine an aluminum case would make it pretty hard to use.
I guess it depends on how handy you are, and how daring ... but I'd have to take a jewelers file and bevel the outside of the opening for the scroll tab to make it more accessable if I owned one.

I think the lever works great for "flipping" up and down. However, I am glad to hear that it is supposed to make a "click" when pushed in.

I thought I broke something on my Axim when I first tried it. With my PPC, I have to push quite hard inwards on the lever for that specific function...I just push the D-pad instead for that function now.

I also don't have an Axim yet. My friend got one recently, and I must say - I'm very wary about that scroll dial. My dad uses a Sony Clie that has a Scrollwheel as strong as steel, but the one on my friends axim just looked like it was going to fall off.

I just want to turn the damn thing off. I NEVER use it. It gets bumped occasionally when I'm listening to Audiobooks from Audible.com and it fast forwards at lightning speed. I was actually going to take the unit apart and remove the switch but the unit is put together pretty solid and I was scared I would break it trying to open the case.

I'm also wary of the scroll dial, I still find it shocking that an entire forum is dedicated to the errors of this particular product.

Not that it's a bad product... but it is a little dissuaging when one entertains the idea of putting down more then a few dollars.

I like the dial, it seems to work fine for me! Of course i originated from a Palm Zire (the old one), so anything is good! lol

BTW, I don't think it is going to break, OMG people, it is just a sound, lol.
