My backup battery seems to be loosing and gaining power percentage. Is this by design? I figured the only time the backup would loose power was when it was needed, if the main battery goes dead.

Any comments?

This is a known problem with the Axim Backup Battery/meter, there are many treads that talk to this issue you can do a search and find them.
I attached one of the many threads.

Hope this helps

I think it may just be the battery meter trying to give an estimate because the power of the backup battery shouldnt fluctuate, if anything it should only go down since its not rechargable.

It also has to do with the battery. Some of them have been sitting on the shelves for weeks. I got a replacement Axim (was having nav pad problems on original) and the backup battery has been at 100%, while on my old Axim it when from 70% to 90% all day long.

In other words, if you think it's somehow abnormal, invest in a new one. They're cheap.

Got a new battery at the Shack, and all seems at 100% faithfully. :D
