Magicstor Microdrive Pocket PC 2003 Problem

Hi All,

I'm new to the forums here so please forgive me if this question's been asked before although I can't find the answer from looking through past posts.

I have a Dell Axim X5 running Pocket PC (sometimes known as Windows Mobile) 2003 v 4.20.1081 (Build 13100 - NOT SE). I have just purchased a Magicstor 2.2GB CF Microdrive only to find that despite it spinning up, the X5 does not display it as a drive in File Explorer.

I have tried the microdrive in a collegue's Axim X5 running Pocket PC 2002 and it's fine. It also works fine under Windows Mobile 2003 SE on another collegues Axim X50v.

I have installed the Dell Compact Flash driver update (released Aug 2004) but the microdrive still isn't recognised.

Can anyone help me at all?

All suggestions gratefully received!!

Thank you in advance,

Andrew

Did you search the forums? I think this one has been discussed extensively, but I can't remember where.

I did find another post on here about the Magicstor and Axim X5 but the only advice was to uprade the CF slot driver (which I've done) and it's still not working, so I'm guessing that only fixes the bug for those with PPC 2003SE or PPC 2002.

Anyone else got any ideas?

I think it's a compatibility issue with WM 2003 itself.

I used the MagicStor with my Toshiba under WM2003 so it must be problem specific to the Dell.
Have you tried formatting it?
Is it currently FAT16 or FAT32?
You might also try Pocket Mechanic.
It can sometimes find drives that the OS can't and repair them.

Others here have had problems with that combination. It often works with PPC2002. In general, the Magicstor drives have been very quirky. Some work, some don't, and some sorta work. There like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.

Mine works great with my X5 using 2002. I've yet to hear of anyone getting it to work with and X5 running 2003. There is no 2003 SE for the X5 so if you want to use it you'll have to install 2002.

I was just given a Jornada 820 running Windows CE 3.0 (2.11 core) and much to my surprise it even works great with that old thing.

Thanks for all your replies guys!

Looks like my best route will be to format it, re-install WM2003 and if I still have no joy, roll back to PPC2002 and loose the fancy callendar ad-ons etc.

Does anyone know of any other disadvantages of PPC2002 against WM2003 i.e. program compatability etc, or is it just cosmetic?

I'm not sure. How can I tell and which would be preferable?

Just looked this up on Google - looks pretty cool! I'll give that a go tonight before I re-install Windows.
