Same problem

For the last few months I have had a 0% readout. I have tried countless batteries (ok only 4 or 5) and have also cleaned and bent the contacts, but I'm a little concerned about soldering on it. My device worked fine for over a year before this happened.

See my above msg. I repaired 3 x5's with this problem in Feb and they are still going strong with the same B/U batteries. I cahnge the main battery several times a day.
If you can solder at all, it's not hard to do.

I'm at my wits end with this. I tried removing and re-inserting the battery, soft resets, hard resets, bending the contacts, and rubbing the battery and contacts with an eraser; however, I still get this error, even with two new batteries.

Dell tech support is clueless about the issue. I find it hard to believe no one else has called them about this.

I'm not going to solder anything, so what can I do?

No, it should read like this:

The whole try a new battery and hard reset is such a basic response. It's the 'easy' way out for them to tell if its software or hardware.

I'm not going to solder anything, so what can I do?

Here's a few solutions:

Get some chicken bones and drench them in goats blood. Now set the X5 down in the center of a ouija board and form a pentagram with the bones around the X5. Leave it sit there for 666 minutes and your battery problems might go away.

Spend some big $$$$$ on a new PDA.

Use the solution that Joe gave you for a 100% cure...but since you're "not going to solder anything" you'll need to pay someone to do the simple 5 minute task for you.

Face the facts, your X5 is simply BROKEN and Joe gave you the solution. Saying you're not going to solder anything is like having the fuel pump fail in your car and then demanding that FORD give you another simple solution over the phone to get it running again...oh maybe like pressing some buttons on the radio for that magic cure.

I have had my Axim since March 2003 but this is only my second day at this website. Someone else has the same problem and posted their thread in the main X5 forum area. Here is what I wrote in that thread:

I started having that problem back in December. I replaced the backup battery and a few days later I would get the warning that it was at 0%. Then the next day it would be back at 100%. Unfortunately on one of the days that it was at 0%, I removed the main battery and I lost all of my information so, as a warning, do backups regularly.

The next thing that you may start to notice (if it hasn't started to happen already) is that your touch screen doesn't respond correctly. I would tap the OK in the top right hand corner of the screen to close a window and the keypad menu at the bottom right hand corner would pop up. I would have to play around with it for a while before it would work right again.

I never seemed to have the time to check this problem out so, after a few months of this, I found myself (on more then one occasion) tempted to throw my Axim at a wall. It wasn't until just 2 weeks ago that I did a search on the internet and found out what the problem was (half way down the page of this URL read, "QUOTE DELL USER MARKINS". http://www.dealtime.com/xPR-Dell_Axi...D-104128810628).

There is a flex cable that connects the touchscreen to the motherboard and it may be starting to short out like mine was. I followed the instructions on the website and now my Axim works just like it did on the first day that I bought it. No more low backup battery warnings and the touchscreen works great.
