I went to the Dell site and went into support.
I put in my tag number for my axim and came up with this after a little digging:

From the download page:
Downloads for your Dell > Select a device > Select a download type > Select Format

Select a download format

Release Title: Handhelds: Dell Center Navigator Button, Patch, Pocket PC, Multi Language, Axim X5, v.V1.05, A00
Release Date: 1/8/2003
Description: Axim X5 Center Navigator Button patch file

Important Information
If the Dell Enable center navigator button is installed, the push down button of the D-pad will perform the Action function, just the same as the push in behavior of Jog Dial.

From further down on the page:
Additional Information

This is a patch file that will enable the 5 way navigation button.

Enables the 5 way navigation button.

This file is compatible with the following systems running the following operating systems: Axim X5
Pocket PC

I am having trouble downloading the file though. Will keep trying.

Hey!
Thanks for bringing that to our attention! Had some difficulty downloading as well. Tried FTP from the /Handhelds directory and there it was! D/L, installed, and now have fifth function on d-pad (ie. select}!

Thanks again,
Jeff :D

**If you are having trouble using the Dell setup.exe in the patch on your desktop (per the instructions from Dell), use this fix**

1. Download the patch from this ftp: Dell Axim Hotfix (ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/Handheld/R54079.EXE)

2. Open R54079.exe and unzip the files

3. Transfer the files onto your Axim

4. Open the aximx5.cab file in file explorer on Axim (has an icon with box and paper)

5. The patch will be installed and you will have to soft reset your axim on the setup's prompt.

The select/action function (center press) will now work on your Axim. :)

This program can be uninstalled

***Note: Some replies have said that the Dell Setup.exe file does work from the desktop. I would suggest trying this first as it details how to check to see if the patch is installed and how to delete it. If it doesn't work after clicking OK on the desktop pc, use the above instructions to install the patch***

Hey fellas Dell released a patch for the center button action on the D-pad, read about it in the dell forums here:

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/bo...essage.id=10338

Download the patch, copy the files to the axim and execute them, heres the file:

ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/Handheld/R54079.EXE

Might wanna make this a stickey for awhile.

Laterz Fellas.

I don't know if its just me, but I noticed that my Axim became rather sluggish after this patch...

After installing the patch, with no problem, the Axim will not complete a sync. I'm getting an error message that the PDA is not responding. Uninstalled Activesync, reinstalled, and was able to do ONE sync. Anyone else experience this? And I also notice slower performance.

Seems all worked fine with me as well. Install of the patch went smooth, reboot, voila. All working fine, response time is as it was before. No hang-ups observed.

I am looking for the D-Pad patch. The url posted does not have this anymore. It looks like the patch has been removed from dell ftp site. Anybody has a copy they can post or any idea why it was taken off :(
