output impedance of headphone jack

Does anyone happen to know the output impedance from the headphone jack on the Axim X5? I used a Y-cable to connect my Axim to a Crate Taxi TX15 portable amplifier which has a set of CD inputs (phono plugs). There is no volume control for this input on the Crate. When I play a song through Windows Media Player and set the volume slider on the program all the way down, it blasts out of the amp loud even at the lowest setting (any lower and it's off completely). I'm told it's an impendance matching problem and I need to introduce a 600 ohm matching transformer between the Axim and the amp in order to have smooth volume control through Media Player. Same thing happens if I hook my laptop to the amp via its headphone out. Any ideas?

Well, if it happend with another device (Laptop) then it sounds to me that the input may be wired wrong inside the amp. It may actually be setup to be a Line or Guitar/Bass input and therefor is preamping the signal preparing for it to be a Mic or Intrument.
