Screen Lightup Glitches
I've got a problem that is stumping me. When I turn on my Ax, the screen is dark. I have to hold the power button to get the light to come on-- EVERY TIME. Nothing I've done so far has seemed to correct the problem. I know if I do a hard reset the problem will likely go away, but naturally I don't want to do that unless absolutely necessary.
Anyone possibly have a glitch solution?

Hard reset
well you could you pocket back-up to make a backup and hard reset, i've done it about 4 times and it works like a charm!!! only 1 minute for the backup and another one to restore it!
Nmkid uses this to and he's really positif about it.
really can't think of another way to fix this.
well, let us know.

Well I'm only new at this and I'm still awaiting delivery of my Axim so what do I know....
But I read that if you push the power off button for too long when switching it off, it turns the back light off. When you turn it back on again it restarts in the same state
Maybe you just need to be kinder to your machine?:hide:

Welcome to the forum Bernie.
Yah, holding the power button is the FIRST thing I tried. I've also tried going to the power section and altering menu choices there. It's unlikely there's a menu somewhere controling this. I mean, one day it was working fine... next morning I turn it on and this.

Well, I just did a hard reset and everything worked just fine. Then I restored my backup... and the problem is back. So obviously something I installed or uninstalled is causing the problem. Curse idiot programmers.

The on/off button has two functions. A quick click is on/off. A longer press is bright/dim. From your description, it sounds like you are pressing the button too long, it's coming on and then dimming. Try a quick click. The Ax does take a little bit to come on, and I have discovered that if I hold the button waiting for the screen to light, it's going to trigger the bright/dim function.
I suspect the reason it's come back from the restore is that with more stuff on the Ax it takes longer to start, so you are holding down the button longer and it triggers the bright/dim.
Just quick click and wait.

Now Jake, this is Wayfinder here, not a newbie. (see the Supermember tag there?) :p 'sides, I already addressed that earlier. This is something fishy... don't know exactly what.

Well, the problem is, I've been using these programs for ages and everything worked just fine. Then one morning... light problem. And I can't figure out why. I do know how to eliminate it (and frankly have) but I'd like to know what might have caused the problem in the first place.
Which brings me to a question: does anyone else ever have problems with sitting the Ax overnite and the next day something is buggy? I've heard of other users complaining of this.

Wayfinder, I recognized your moniker, but it was this sentence that got me to post! I remember the first time I pressed and held the on/off button I was shocked with the result. I thought I had broken something. And I had had the Ax for about 3-4 weeks at that point. I searched the user's guide and eventually got to the legendary page 12!
So, even with the appellation Super Member and Moderator, we can still learn (and need to)! I think. If I have to. Maybe. A little. Sometimes.

I laughed at that one. I can imagine exactly how that felt! :crooked:
Several years ago I taught computer classes in the corporate sector. The very first thing I did in class was have people rapidly and randomly pound on the keyboard to prove to them they couldn't accidentally cause their screen to blow up. I told them, "In order to really mess things up, you have to know what you're doing."

Most temporary "strangenesses" go away with a soft reset, in my experience. Soft reset is to the PocketPC what Ctrl-Alt-Del is to the PC--a multiple-times-daily event.

Oh, I don't know about that. My wife of many years hasn't actually damanged any hardware, but she sure has screwed up a LOT of software over the years! (And yes, she'll admit that, although now she has her own website and is getting to be quite a web denizen in her own right!)

Well, as an example, I remember back in my DOS days, it was pretty hard to wipe out an entire hard disk drive. Unless, of course, you knew enough about the FORMAT command to be dangerous. Like the time I wanted to format a floppy diskette and blithely entered: FORMAT C:
Then when the computer asked me... "This is going to format your hard disk drve... are you sure you want to do that???" of course I answered, "Yes you ignorant machine!... WAIT! NO!!!"
But of course, by then I'd hit the button. :rolling:
