French ROM Upgrade -Success

I just wanted to let those in Europe (France) know that I just bought an X5 (300mhz :( ) at A00 and upgraded the ROM to A02 with absolutely no problems. As others have complained, however, the time it took to transfer files during backup was really extraordinary.

For those needing to know if you can change the language (mine is a French Pocket PC), it says in the upgrade instructions (in French and English) that you CANNOT CHANGE THE LANGUAGE OF THE SYSTEM. I didn't test this, though I was tempted! If anyone HAS done this, I know that I and others would be interested to know if it worked.

I would like to know if you used the english update (which is the one i've got) or you used an specific french update, to try and update myself my spanish axim with the english update.

Does anyone know how to change (not update) my spanish ROM to an english one??

I used specifically the french update. I DID download english and french, just to read the FAQs, and they BOTH said clearly that you can't change the language.

But I am REALLY curious to know if one can still do it...

I didn't know Axims were being sold in France? I knew they were in Britan, but are they being sold all over Europe? What about Asia?

I bought mine from www.dell.fr

Though it was shipped from Ireland, I think...

I know nothing about Asia or the rest of Europe.

The whole system is in French.

I'm afraid i've got a lot of things to tell :)

First is to thank you for your answer rvdparis.

Second...I TRIED TO CHANGE LANGUAGE AND BROKE MY AXIM (so i wouldn't recomend you to try)

Here goes how I did it...

I downloaded both spanish and english ROM upgrades. I thought: It's a ROM dump so if I try and dump the english ROM upgrade over my hard resetted Axim I would get language changed.

When I tried to dump the english ROM upgrade it told me that the languaje wasn't compatible. I even tried to hex edit the 2 english ROM files, change the signature at the begining of the file to the spanish signatures and move and rename these files to the spanish upgrade installation and try it from there. Still no way.

Here is the easy trick: Finally I tried to simply change the regional settings of my Axim to English (United States) and the english ROM upgrade program recognised it as the english Axim model (yes I also couldn't belive it but you can easily try).

So I started the ROM upgrade proccess:
1/12
2/12
3/12
(stuck):crooked:
(no answer):rolling:

After 30 minutes I hard reseted the Axim and it had half the menus in English, half in spanih, most of the programs missing and no one running...

That's the sad story of my Axim... may she now Rest In Peace.

I supose that there must be some hardware incompatibility between the english and the multilanguaje versions (my spanish one did not include the OCR feature for the notes handwritten text which was included in the english manual, so that could mean it had some type of chip missing -cheaper for Dell-)

By the way, in Europe there are at least French, German, Italian and Spanish languaje models.

Hope this may be of any help, I'm afraid I now will not usually come back to this forum as I now have no Dell to make smoke
;)

...enjoy yours!!!

Mad

i've got exactly the same problem with A03 upgrade over a French speaking system... Though I carefully followed the instructions, now i'm stuck with ActiveSync not working and (apparently) no other way to send back a french ROM!!

By the way, their thinking that all french speaking users MUST use French "azerty" keyboard really sucks! No way to change it to a Swiss French "qwertz"...

Anyway.... though it's quite late, i'm not giving up yet. Still trying to find a solution...

Hi Manu,

the problem seems to me that the resident slave connection ROM code is lost in the Axim. But I don't think they dump the ROM in the factory using ActiveSync. I'm sure the must use some sort of a more direct link, as the just shipped memories won't have any resident activesync software in them.

So as I think they can restore them at the factory, so it could be shipped as "defective Axims under guarantee" (better not try to explain to the technical support what we've done to them).

Hope we have better luck, greetings,

Formeitor.

DONT DO IT

REALLY, do NOT try to apply a ROM update with a different language version.

I tried.

My Axim is dead.

ROMS international languages

To manu_b: I am spanish and live in Spain I bought my AXIM in USA, much cheaper.I am bilingual English-Spanish. So like you said about the French..I would like to use English and Spanish in my Axim.Transcriber wont recognize the Spanish letters (ñ) or accents. There are also lots of Lathinamericans living in the USA...I am sure they would like to have AXIM in Spanish or both English-spanish. I wonder if Dell will come out with a ROM upgrade for several languages. It is stupid being stucked with one.

For the OS I have no problem wether it is English or Spanish as we have regional settings that change the date,currency,.... The data input (Tanscriber or others) is my main concern because it doesnt come with Spanish dictionary so it wont recognize Spanish cursive (harder) so I write letters separately.

To formeitor: Thanks for doing it first.I planned to do the reverse thing.Change English to Spanish. You saved my Axim!! Be glad the death of yours was useful for other people...to keep theirs alive :) in the name of science and experimentation :D
Sorry.

PS: Has anyone tryed Calligrapher insted of Transcriber??It seems to support several languages at same time.

Nice to see there are Axim users in Spain...I thought I was the only one ;) Madrid and Sevilla are represented...Cool.

Has anybody tried any GPS programs for Spain yet? I'm thinking of making the purchase but would like to know how precise the software is first...

Juanpa74 - Where about in Sevilla are you? I live in Coria del Rio...A town so small I think everyone gets to be Mayor once...heh heh

I too have bought my Ax in the USA as it's much cheaper...The advanced sale price was just about as much as the basic version here on Dell.es...

I used to live in Spain a while back ... 1979-1982 ...
My dad was stationed at Torrejon AFB, Madrid ... We lived in a little community outside Madrid called Royal Oaks ... One day I hope I can return and do some more traveling for a vacation ..

Hola jworthi746!
Yo vivo en Sevilla, en el centro. Tan pequeño es Coria del Rio?Yo creia q era mayor.
Did you find a solution for transcribir and special Spanish characters? (ñ and tildes)
Another question: It took me more than 90 minutes!!To make a full backup through the craddle and it was just the 64 Mg RAM!!
Restoring took like 2 hours!!Is that normal?
thank you

Bien, no es que pequeño - It just seems that small being the city I'm from has 1 million people and Coria has about 30,000:)

I haven't look for a solution to the transcriber as a majority of my computer-related communication is in english.

To back up and restore shouldn't take that long...What method of active sync are you using to connect to your computer?

Also, try searching some of the forums here as they are filled with tons of info...
