X5 major screen alignment problems

Well, my X5 started giving me screen alignment problems the other day. No troubles, right? Just run the alignment tool you say? Well, it's so far out of alignment that I can't tap anything on the top part of the screen because it registers down below the Windows button, title bar, etc.

I thought that maybe my screen protector might be causing me some problems, so I've removed that and it hasn't changed anything. I'm ready for a hard reset to see if that solves things, but before doing that I thought I'd see if the forums could solve my problem.

Anybody have any thoughts on how to activate my upper left Windows button so I can try and fire up my screen alignment program? That might not solve it, though, because the bottom part of my screen doesn't seem to be nearly as far out of alignment as the top (maybe none at all).

You can try a "fake" hard reset by holding the power button while doing a soft reset, but instead of confirming the hard reset, cancel out of it. I believe that will get you to the alignment screen.

Thx Gigi, I just tried that but it didn't work for me. It cleared my date/time settings (or so it told me), but didn't get me to the alignment screen. After that I held my breath and did a real hard reset. That DID do the trick (phew, now no time without my Ax waiting for Dell to repair/replace it under warranty), but now I'm in the unenviable position of rebuilding all of my installed programs, etc after a year and a half of customizing. I've never done a hard reset, so _hopefully_ everything will be rebuilt after I restore from my complete backup. I've heard stories about backups not working, though, so I've got my fingers crossed.

I've reset my regional setting because I've heard that that can cause a backup to not restore. I'll find out later today (no time now) if things restore smoothly. :)

Never a hard reset in 1.5 years? WOW, that is incredible. Good luck with the restore! :)

Well, guess what? The restore went just fine except for one thing that was nagging at the back of my mind- the restore restored my botched screen alignment settings!!!!! ARGH!!!!! Life's looking a tad more difficult now. Sync my files and data and manually reload all my programs. Grr...

Yep, that's always the risk with restoring. That's why it's a good idea to have a "clean" backup of most of your settings/programs, etc. BTW, reloading your programs is not that difficult if you used ActiveSync to install them in the first place. Just go to Tools - Add/Remove Programs and then check off the ones you want installed. You do have to have serials/registration codes though.
