Today my x50v spontaneously rebooted, probably due to a new application I loaded. When it restarted, all of my data, programs, etc. were gone and I had to go through the align screen step, practice the cut / paste step, etc. Not a huge problem as I back up frequently. I went to restore from my most recent backup and Activesync tells me to select a partnership. I chose Standard Partnership and on the next screen I chose to sync with my desktop computer. On the next screen it asks me to name my device, but my device's name is already listed in the text window. I try to choose next to continue, but it tell me the device name I've chosen is not unique and is already in use. It won't let me get past this point. My x50v has the same name stored in it as the one in the computer yet I can't get past this point. The best I could without creating another profile is to log in as a guest, but it won't let me access any of my backups. Any idea what I have to do to get past this? Thanks in advance! BTW, I'm using Activesync 3.8, Windows Pocket 2003 SE, and Win XP Pro SP2 on the computer. Thanks again!
What you need to do is delete the original partnership. With your Axim DISconnected from your PC, open up ActiveSync on the PC side. Click on File - Delete Partnership. Make sure you delete the one you want to re-establish.
If I delete the existing partnership on my PC, won't I lose the partnership I'm trying to restore? Or will it be restored when I restore from my backup?
Ok. I did what you said and I was able to restore my x50v back to where i was before the crash (restore the last full backup, then the more recent incrementals), however, I still cannot get it to sync properly. I deleted the partnership as you said and it then allowed me to go in as a guest and restore etc. Then I disconnected, reset my pda, and went back to activesync on the computer. I verified that there were no partnerships. I put the pda back into the cradle and tried to sync it, but I got the same error as before. It won't let me get past the screen where the device is named because it tells me that the name is already in use, even after deleting the partnerships. If I disconnect the pda and check to see what partnerships are there, activesync shows none. I can connect fine if I want to use a Guest connection, but I can't connect to Pocket_PC (the name of my x50v). Any ideas?
When I open ActiveSync without the device attached it says in big letters "No Partnerships" and under the File menu everything is greyed out in the mobile device section. I was thinking about removing and reinstalling ActiveSync.
On the subject, ActiveSync is such a hokey, non-intuitive program. Most of the trouble I had yesterday wouldn't have been a problem if Microsoft had spent a little more time designing AS. I guess that's the trouble with most MS software though, but by version 3.8 you'd think Bill G would have gotten it closer to user friendly than it is... Ok... I'm done ranting now...
When I had the problem you initially describe, it was caused by the fact that the backups/partnership had been made with the device set to GMT-London time, yet when the machine rebooted, it had defaulted to some other foreighn timezone. Changing the timezone on the Axim allowed my to access my recent backup, and it was all sorted. Didn't need to delete any partnerships, or reinstall anything.
Thanks for the reply! I'm able to access the backups as a guest. I just can't get AS to let me sync properly or create new backups.
Anyone have any thoughts on deleting AS and reinstalling? I'll probably lose my settings but that's not a big deal... I'm more concerned that it still won't let me create / use the partnership that's in my x50v.
BTW, I just saw today that ROM version A05 is out (and has been for nearly 2 months). I'm still using A02 .
I seem to remember having a similar problem when I updated to A02 from whatever it was shipped with. I think this was when I ended up with two partnerships on my computer for a while. I was never able to access the first one. I think I eventually just copied the first partnership info into the second, deleted the first, and renamed the remaining one.
There's no harm in uninstalling and reinstalling ActiveSync. Make sure you are using version 3.8, which is the latest "stable" version. You can also try a later ROM, but do realize that while it may help some, it may not help everyone. (BTW, I'm still on A03 and it's working fine.)
Today I removed / reinstalled AS and it didn't change anything. So I just ended up renaming my partnership and everything was fine. I then updated to A05 which went without a hitch, restored from my previous backup and everything is fine so far, however I still have to use the renamed partnership as the original one is still in limbo somewhere... Oh well, not a big problem though, just frustrating!
If you'd like to use the original name, and Activesync doesn't show you any partnerships to delete you can use regedit and search for that name. Delete the folder for that partnership in the registry and it'll take it every time. Sometimes when you delete the partnership it leaves the registry key behind and this solves the problem.
