If the outside ping worked, open PIE and use an IP instead of the url, such as google at http://216.239.39.99/ If this works, it almost certainly is a DNS problem and the easiest solution is to provide your ISP's DNS to the Axim. The only way I've found to do this is to use a static IP (which I'll warn you, makes it a little more difficult to access networks that use DHCP since you have to work your way to the settings and switch it every time you change from/to static).

Hi,

No the ping doesn't work.
I have downloaded NET monitor as suggested in another thread. Again this says connected, and shows the signal strength of the network but doesn't give a network speed and the ping utility on this shows no reply. This is all the more frustrating as everything worked fine before I activated WEP i the network. I guess it shows that it is secure thought!

I deleted the connections settings today whilst at work and rescanned and reset tonight at home. Same problem - green bars full, full wireless symbol (with halo) and odyssey says connected but still no internet or activesynch.

Ike, you seem to know what you are doing so help a lot of us out by doing the following.

My Network is setup using all Microsoft hardware, two PCMCIA cards and One Base Station that my desktop uses. Both the cards work perfectly using the secure settings I have; the AXIM does not.

Do this for us:

Give us a step by step setup of a brand new connection on the AXIM assuming we know what our Network name is. Don't think we know anything. I have read and heard so many different verisons of what might and might not be the right settings that I'm sure I have some right and some wrong.

Thanks for any "startup" help you could provide.

You might want to PM me as well with any suggestions. The AXIM worked with the secure settings until I lost my desktop HD and had to replace and reload everything. I just upgraded to WM5 thinking this would make life easier but the problems remain, wrong setup.

OK, we need to back up. Which version of WEP did you enable? If you are trying 128-bit, I suggest you switch to 64. It's much easier to get 10 characters correct than 26 and in practical terms, it's just as secure. Just make sure you are entering the key in hexidecimal format and you are using 1's (ones) and 0's (zeros) if these are in the key. Hex keys do not have any L's (els) and o's (ohs).
I suggest you not bother with Odyssey. While a few users have found it easier than the WLAN utility, it's only necessary if you are using corporate level security. Even if the PPC says you are connected, it sounds like it is not receiving an IP and that usually means something is blocking it. If it worked before enabling WEP, then WEP is the culprit. Does your router have an option between Open and Shared? On some routers with one of these choices, it automatically enables MAC filtering (I think it is with the Open setting). You might also try switching from whichever it is currently set on to the opposite.
Have you check your router manufacturer's web page for updated firmware? This can also resolve some of these problems.
Finally, if none of these work, try resetting the router (pressing the button on the back of the router for 5 or 10 seconds) and start from scratch. This means reentering the SSID and resetting security - but do these one at a time.

Check the WiFi Guide linked from my signature. I've done my best to make it as simple as I can for the typical user and the troubleshooting section covers the unique situations as best as I can.

Hi,

I've made some progress. I have changed my SSID and set up a new connection on my axim (including DNS addresses) and disabled the firewall on the router. I have now been able to ping the goole site you suggested earlier. I have even been able to log on to my home page at the BBC. Hurray!!! However, it was very very very slow (MUCH slower than before I enabled WEP).

Any thoughts?
