activated WEP and lost my wifi

I used to run a open network at my house. We had lots of people visiting so I had left the wireless network open. I finally decided to get "safe" and activate my WEP encription. I set the network with 13 characters. Both of my computers in my house worked when I typed in my password but when I do with the handheld in the WLAN utility I do not connect. It recognizes the network and says the signal is good but there is no packets moving. The radio antenna appears and the green light flashes but the halo around the antenna on the today screen never appears. It needs a tweek but I can't get it to go.

Any help would be great!

Thanks

Same problem here; had too many people sitting in front of my house using the free access point. both desktops and my laptops work but not the X50v. Symptons, antenna comes up, search beacon comes on, bars at bottom connect and turn white but never green; signal strenght is good, no connections. Worked fine before I WEP'ed the unit.

I assume the 13 characters are the ascii key for 126-bit WEP. I suggest you enter the hexidecimal version (26 characters) on the PPC. Your router probably shows you what the hex key is but if not, there are sites on the web that will do the conversion for you.

I have a good signal and all the green bars are lit up at the bottom of my today screen. Still no halo on my antenna. I went through the whole troubleshooting guide and have had no positive results.

I tried converting to a hexadecimal key but my original key has letters in it. What would the two key haxadecimal result be for "e" ????

hex uses a to f instead of 10 to 15.
edit: google this: convert hex to decimal and you will find a bunch of pages that you just enter your entire hex number and it gives you the decimal equivilent. be sure you enter the entire set of digits though.

You are trying to convert ascii to hexidecimal.

e is 65 (unless it's E, in which case it's 45)
Look here for the conversions.

Can you ping the router, your PC and an outside IP?

If so, try going into the network settings - Start, Settings, Connections (tab), Connections, Set up my Proxy server. On the Proxy server tab, check the top box (This network connects to the Internet) but leave everything else on this page blank. On the General tab, the name should be "My Work Network." OK and then select the Advanced (tab), Select Networks and select "My Work Network" from both of the pull down lists.

You should use WPA instead of WEP because WEP isn't very secure..you might have to upgrade your router firmware on older routers to use it

You get a response from a ping of an outside IP? That suggests it's a DNS problem.
