Worried Multiple Hardware Problems

I am at my wits end with my x50. I loved it when I had WM2003SE on it, then (stupid me) I decided to buy the CD and upgrade to WM5. Since then, I have had nothing but problems. However, this one takes the cake. My Axim died yesterday, it gave me an error something along the lines of "Memory Error", and I had to press the Contacts button to reset, else do a hard reset. Turns out, in addition to this, my battery was dead, and my backup battery is now at 0%. I have read some threads that deal with the strange main battery discharges, and I will try some of the suggestions as soon as I can. But I have a couple questions first:
1. Do you have to replace the backup battery when it dies, or will it recharge?
2. I have read about these ROM updates that may help. Where can you get these? I am using ROM A01, according to my settings.

I am fairly new when it comes to PPCs, so any and all help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

You can download a utility from Dell to put WM2003SE back on...

The update on the CD was a ROM update. You are at A01 of WM5. You can downgrade, I think back to A05 of WM2003SE. Your backup battery will recharge when you charge the main battery.

Yea, I've been having the same problem with the "memory error" also...soon as i hit the contact button...all is fine...but today I lost all my data and now i have to reinstall all my software...I have seen in other posts that some ppl have not been able to revive their ppc at all and ended up with a brink unless they could not figure out how to bring it back. I have to press the reset and the power button (not long enough for a hard reset) then i get the screen that mentions the memory error and then all is fine for a while...i think this is a bug with the upgrade
