Question Volatile folder contents are HUGE!!!

I tried to use the built-in back-up program for WM5 the other day. Backup reported that I had almost 200GB of data to backup. (That's right Gigabytes! ) Considering that my total system memory, (RAM, ROM, and memory cards) totals only 5.2GB, I found this total to be very disconcerting.

I used MemMaid to shag out the culprit. The VOLATILE folder is about 186GB. How is that?

Anyone seen this before?

Can anyone even tell me what that folder is for?

Thanx for any assistance...

I had this exact same problem a few days ago. After WM5 upgrade, and 2 days of getting all my apps installed, customizing, etc it was time for a backup.. but I had over 200 GBs to backup it said!

There was tons of folders and files in the volatile dir, some with HUGE sizes, some even reported negative sizes. All with weird characters in the file/folder names.

I looked around for "scandisk" type apps. sktools, pocket mechanic, and a few others had scandisk tools for sd and cf cards, but no app had any built-in storage scandisk. At least none I could find.

The only solution I could find was a hard-reset. Then resync your outlook items and reinstall apps. Hopefully there is an easier solution sombody can provide.

Is this a x50v with the WM5 upgrade or an x51v? I don't have an answer but I am intersted in seeing what others have to say. This info might help. thanks~

Why doesn't anyone fill out the "PDA" part under their name?

I keep having the same problem - I hard reset twice last week to "cure" this.

Dell x50v, WM5 "upgrade"

Does anyone have an idea why this happens? The file names have invalid characters, so they can't be deleted, and it just keeps growing.

Did you try to backup to one of your cards (CF or SD, or even Built-In Storage)? If you did, then it tried to backup your backup, which meant that you needed to backup the backup of the backup of the...well, you get the picture. The solution is to either specifically exclude the backup file from the backup, or the entire card.

I'm using Sprite backup - but it excludes the backup files. Plus, I'm not backing up anything on the SD or CF card, but it does backup to it.

This only started to be an issue since the WM5 upgrade, and I haven't used the built in backup utility.
